Manje KreyÃ"l, patois and Caribbean music are the highlights of a week of learning as the Caribbean
Students Organization is hosting its annual CSO Week, taking place now through Sunday.
The ongoing event includes opportunities for the CSO to educate, entertain and welcome students from
every culture.
"The purpose of this week is to... show what we've done throughout the year," said the CSO's Vice
Treasurer, Channel Davis. "These events are almost like our rewards, and our members are excited
about them."
The week's festivities began with the CSO participating in the Adopt-a-Highway Program along the 198
next to Delaware Park as their annual community service event.
Davis coordinated the event.
"We had a great turnout," she said. "About 20 people came, including both our members and our
(executive) board."
The CSO's Newsletter chair, Shawambie Webbe, said that the service event was successful.
"It was great," Webbe said. "We had so much fun."
Monday evening in the Dining Hall, the CSO hosted the Taste of Haiti, similar to their annual Taste of the
Caribbean event.
"During dinner time (the Dining Hall) serve(s) Caribbean food, and we play Caribbean music as well
as decorate the dining hall," Webbe said. "This year we are focusing on Haiti... so they will be serving
Haitian food as well as playing Haitian music."
Tuesday evening's program is Taboos in the Caribbean, a program held by the CSO's current King and
Queen, Patrick St. Val and Celine Jamieson.
Every year, two individuals win the CSO King and Queen pageant and join together to put on a program
of their choice for the organization's members. St. Val and Jamieson chose to focus on different taboos
throughout the Caribbean, including tattoos, piercings and other trends.
The organization will be hosting Multicultural Jeopardy at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Assembly Hall 1. CSO
will be defending its Jeopardy title from last year.
"Members and executive board members of different organizations on campus comes together to see
who knows the most about campus life," Webbe said.
At 8:30 p.m. on Thursday in Bulger North, the organization will be hosting Dancehall King and Queen,
their annual dance competition.
Participants will compete in hopes of becoming the CSO's Dancehall King and Queen 2013-2014.
As the school week wraps up, the Culture Show will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Social Hall. This
year's production, called "From Di Heaven to Di Earth," will include acting, singing, dancing, modeling,
poetry and more to highlight the cultural aspects of the different Caribbean islands.
"A lot of students as well as friends come together to make this production happen," Webbe said. "We
make our own props and we have help making certain costumes."
"This show will be creative, fun and eye-opening," Gibson said.
Directly after the culture show, the organization will welcome the Buffalo State community to their
annual Caribash, a concert and party that will take place at 9:30 p.m. on Friday in the Social Hall.
Every year, the CSO brings a Caribbean artist to perform - this year's artist is Elephant Man - and a DJ
plays music all night.
The next day, the organization will host its annual Flag Football Tournament at noon Saturday in the
field adjacent to G Lot.
"It's a big barbeque where students get to put their teams together and come out to play flag football
as well as eat," Webbe said.
The CSO Week will end Sunday at their annual End of Year Banquet.
CSO president Cecelia Barron said that the banquet is a conclusion of everything all of the members
have done.
"There's a PowerPoint of all of our events throughout the year," Barron said. "We thank all of our
supportive members."
Cultural heritage chair Romario Gibson said that he hopes the week will get the campus more involved
with the CSO.
"This week is for people from all different organizations and walks of life to learn about Caribbean
culture," he said.
