Professional Staff Caucus fundraises for student scholarship

Members of the Professional Staff Caucus had a night out on Friday for pizza, wings and drinks
in support of the Professional Staff Caucus's Buffalo State Scholarship Fund.

The fundraiser was from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 26 at Mooney's, 1531 Military Rd. in Kenmore. In
return for their $20 gift, donors who support the fundraiser received a dinner that included wine,
beer, pizza, wings, and salad.

According to Josie Adamo, chair of the caucus, this is the fundraiser's third year. She said the
money raised was originally envisioned to be an endowment awarded through the Professional
Staff Caucus. Having raised just over $5,000, the caucus decided to make it a scholarship fund
instead.

"A couple years ago, it was $10,000 you needed to have an endowment," she said. "Well, it's
gone up to $25,000. We're never going to make that, unfortunately, so, I think we're going to
start giving out a scholarship in the fall."

Megan Keugh, representative of the Budget, Staff and Allocations Committee said that they
will be looking for student qualities that reach other areas than academia such as community
service.

According to Adamo, student recipients of the scholarships will need more than a high grade
point average, but any student will be able to apply.

"We would look at a student who also had other things that they've done either while they're in
college or if they're coming in from high school," Adamo said. "There's a lot of grant money out
there and a lot of scholarships for students who fall in that 3.5 to 4.0, but I think we'd like to find
something that represents professionalism, maybe community service or working for something
other than their grades."

The fundraiser also included auctions of gift certificates, theme baskets and a 50/50 raffle.

Adamo said that Mooney's was a good place to have the fundraiser because of its proximity to
campus.

The general manager of Mooney's, Chris McCann, said the restaurant often participates in
fundraisers.

"Anything we can do for the students," McCann said. "I have no problem giving them the best
space we possibly can so they can make the most money for their organization."
