As DJ Moisi and DJ Asid played the most current club beats, the student production crew guided people
to their seats and handed out VIP swag bags. There was a girl who had cut the back of her shirt into the
face of Jack Skellington and others who had either cut the sleeves or the bottom off to give a cropped
look.
The atmosphere wasn't rushed or stressful. Audience members chatted in their seats, catching up or
meeting new people while sipping on wine or beer.
The room was dark, with lights only hitting the all-black catwalk. White chairs lined the space and as the
seats filled up the lights began to flicker.
Males and females alike dressed head-to-toe in the latest fashions and crowded the Pierce Arrow
Building on Elmwood Avenue Saturday night for Buffalo State's annual fashion show, Runway 5.0.
As the clock struck 8:40 p.m. BSC instructor Erin Habes and student director Shannon Campbell
appeared on stage.
Habes welcomed everyone and thanked the audience and the judges, which included Aeropostale's
Vice President of Visual Merchandising, Jeff Lee, a graphic designer from American Eagle, Andy Beller,
the designer for Victoria's Secret PINK, Ruth Cooney, photographer Luke Copping, KISS 98.5 host Janet
Snyder and New Era Product Development Manager Gina Goss.
Fashion Technology faculty collections were shown first, followed by the Cotton Inc. Challenge
Collection, which was all white with mild embellishment. One eye-catching design was an interlocking
grid jacket with wide sleeves over a bandeau and pants. Collars, layering and high-waisted pants were
also featured in this line.
After this, models showcased each collection. One of the models waltzed down the runway sporting an
embroidered Victorian-inspired full-length coat with a collar. When the model stopped to pose at the
end of the runway, she unbuttoned the jacket, uncovering a metallic gold body suit.
New Era and Vitamin Water, who were both sponsors of the show, held a contest for students to design
a graphic tee that would be shown off at the show. Male models wearing street-style clothing, some
carrying Vitamin Water skateboards, strutted down the catwalk showing off the student t-shirt designs.
Student and VIP Director Chelsea Miller won $250 with her design of a teal-haired street girl sitting with
a Vitamin Water rocking a New Era cap.
For the student collections, Minami Okajima took home the $750 prize. Her designs featured sheer-
patterned, lace-hooded jackets. Some of the dresses looked like they had buttoned down aprons over
them with knee-length skirts. Skirt length was popular amongst all of the designer collections. Many
designs had a dress or skirt in which the front of the silhouette was above the knee in the front and calf-
length in the back. This look was also prominent in Katie Gariepy's collection, which also incorporated a
lot of neon colors. Gariepy received $150 for coming in third place in the student collections.
The finale of the show was the senior collections. Gwendolyn Smith's collection was sporty with a lot of
green and blues, featuring shorts and tank tops. Faith Scheffer's line featured dresses that were all the
same color and had a pattern design of red, orange and yellow.
"It was pretty much just one piece of fabric that she wrapped around us and secured with one pin," said
model and BSC student Emily Knauer.
Kendra Folsom's line was made up of flirty dresses and navy blue jumpsuits. The winner of the senior
collection, Kathryn Jakubowski, took home $2,000 and a Luke Copping photo shoot. Her collection was
inspired by a day-to-night collection. All of the designs were embellished with buttons and different
color shoulder straps.
