Choir performs fall concert in Rockwell

The Buffalo State Women's Choir hosted a concert Thursday at the Performing Arts Center
that was free for all students.
"The most special aspect about this concert and any other concert that the women's choir
performs is that it's an academic test for the students in the choir," said Victoria Furby,
director of the women's chamber choir.
Furby, who is also the coordinator of music education, said the choir is made up of about
30 female students who hold rehearsals as if they were classes, every Monday, Wednesday
and Friday afternoon.
In this past concert, the women's choir sang a large section of its repertoire. They are
also preparing for an approaching tour in which the underlying theme is "Women as
Peacemakers."
Furby said she has a lot of experience in her field and the choir is full of skillful and
qualified choir members, including freshman Casey Wojcik.
"I joined the choir because I am a music major and I have a concentration in voice and have
already had choir experience in high school," Wojcik said.
Before this past concert, she said she felt confident that everyone knew what they were
doing and went into it knowing she and the other members of the choir were going to do a
good job.
"Once I'm up there and get used to it, it feels like home," she said.
Wojcik said she felt like the concert turned out very well and everyone did a good job. She
said she hopes to build more confidence before going onstage and also decrease her nerve
level for future concerts.
Aside from being good experience for Wojcik, she said it's a good way to apply what she's
learning in the choir to her voice concentration.
"Being in the choir applies me to my studies because learning to blend my voice with others
is helpful," she said.
She said she hopes when she graduates she gets the most out of the choir.
"I want to have a better musical experience, to have learned more repertoire and to have
made friends in the same interest," she said.
Another member of the choir, who wished to remain anonymous, is also a music major
with a concentration in voice. She said she felt excited to sing with her friends for the first
time. She also said she liked that it was more formal than a high school concert and she
enjoyed it as her first college concert.
She also said that when she was singing in front of the big audience it became easy once
you get the hang of it.
"It's fun to share music with others because it is good expression and helps to not be
shy," she said. "The concert turned out fun, especially during the last song when everyone
started to dance. The audience could tell we were having fun."
She said she wishes in the upcoming concerts the choir would get closer, like family,
because there's more comfort when they are all on stage and relaxed.
She said she advises potential choir members to not take it as a joke.
"You have to love music and also love to sing. Don't do it because you see others doing it, do
it for yourself," she said.
The women's choir holds a minimum of two concerts a semester. Thursday's concert was
the first and they will have another later in the semester that will be more holiday oriented,
Furby said.
In some occasions, the choir performs in special events like the commencement ceremony
in May.
