The Buffalo State men's soccer team dropped a pair of games this past week, losing 3-0 to
Roberts Wesleyan (3-5) Wednesday, and 2-0 to Fredonia (3-9/ 2-1) Saturday afternoon.
With the two losses, it extends the Bengals' (1-8-1/ 0-2-1) scoreless streak to 453 minutes and 48
seconds, leaving head Coach Rudy Pompert to question his team's motive.
"Slow starts and individual mistakes is the common theme here," Pompert said. "We're not
capitalizing and we're not playing hard until we're down one or two goals in a game and its plain
unacceptable."
The Bengals have now been shutout in seven of their ten games this season and have only scored
eight goals while giving up 20.
"I can't really put my hands on the problem but we have to get out the gates better than we
have," said assistant coach Michael Chieffo. "We can't be down by two goals in the first half and
expect to win ball games."
In Wednesday's non-conference game, Roberts Wesleyan jumped on the Bengals early,
outshooting them 9-2, while scoring in the 11th and 35th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Roberts Wesleyan added an insurance goal in the 86th minute, handing the Bengals a 3-0 loss
Ian Huntoon made eight saves for the Bengals.
"We had a tough time adjusting to their style of play with it being a non-conference game," said
defender Brett Lanham. "We're playing too much catch-up ball and we're missing opportunities
that other teams are capitalizing on."
Saturday, Fredonia capitalized on the Bengals' slow start, scoring two first-half goals to earn the
2-0 win.
The Blue Devils scored at the 18:56 mark off a corner kick, and their second goal came just four
minutes later, putting the game out of reach for the Bengals.
"It's really becoming a problem that can't be an excuse anymore," said Pompert regarding the
slow starts by the Bengals. "Our juniors and seniors aren't getting the job done and while it's
soccer and a sport, it's also a business and I have to find the right players that will win us ball
games."
Buffalo State actually outshot Fredonia 12-11, but the Blue Devils held a 10-4 advantage in
corner kicks.
Ian Huntoon had four saves in the loss, including a penalty kick save in the 87th minute, while
Fredonia's Mike Schreiner had five saves in the shutout win.
The Bengals played without co-captain Jonathan Commisso for the third straight game while
also losing Phil Pinzone and Trevor O'Connor to injuries. Junior co-captain Andrew Dugan
returned after missing two games, starting against Fredonia.
The Bengals next play Friday at Cortland at 4 p.m., starting a string of six consecutive
conference games. Pompert said the stretch of games will be an audition for the future and a
defining moment of the season.
"I want to see more out of this team and I will be looking to see what I get and what adjustments
I will have to make for next season. It's a sense of quality and effort," Pompert said.
