Government must make sure guns are in good hands

As much as I hate to talk about politics and government, I came across a subject that I felt should
be addressed. One that I have a personal experience and problem with.

Lives are lost everyday all over the world. But the number of lives that our lost due to gun use is
staggering.

Numerous events that have happened in the last couple of years have left the United States in
uncharted territory.

There was the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007 that killed 32 people and wounded 17 others,
along with the Sandy Hook elementary shooting just last year that took 20 children's lives along
with six adult members in Newton, Conn. These tragic events have gone down as the first and
second deadliest mass shootings by a single person in American history.

In a country where individual freedom and freedom of speech are expressed, this situation, in
retrospect, has asked for the interference of government and President Barack Obama.

Just Monday, President Obama was negotiating with Republicans regarding increasing gun
control laws to include background checks on those purchasing firearms. The proposal has hit a
stand still, though, as conservatives feel that the proposal would violate the Second Amendment,
which states the right to beat arms.

Obama, supported by many of the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre, have
backed Obama in his attempt to tighten gun laws.

I agree with Obama and the gesture that we, the United States, need to tighten gun control laws,
even if it means the government getting involved.

Too many innocent lives have been taken by the possession of a gun by people who are either
not licensed to have one or are not in the right state of mind to be handling one.

In the massacres mentioned before, a student simply went off due to the way he was being
treated, while the other was treated with autism. While these are not necessarily excuses for the
actions these two men took, it still presents a problem that we have as a country: how are these
types of people getting their hands on firearms?

I understand that some own gun licenses for protective purposes and have them safely stored in
case of emergency, but for every one person who has one for protection, there's one person who
has one and uses it for the wrong reasons.

I just lost a cousin to a gun shooting. He was in his 50s and had four daughters and a
granddaughter. At this point, I am enraged with the thought of certain people owning firearms.

With that said, I think the government and President Obama need to move forward in tightening
gun control laws along with laws in every state. I think we are in a time of flux where gun
control has spun out of control and it's taking innocent lives of people who have a family and a
whole life to live.

In 2010, it was reported by multiple reports that there were 19,392 firearm-related suicide deaths
and 11,078 firearm-related deaths in the United States.

Those staggering numbers will only increase if nothing is done to control who is receiving
guns. Instead of being a statistic I think it's time the government steps in and looks to make a
difference in people's lives because at the end of the day, that's what's at stake at the mercy of a
gun.
