Famous author hosts campus book signing

Buffalo State welcomed the entire campus community as well as the public Tuesday to sit
in on a reading from writer Mick Cochrane of his newest novel "Fitz" in Claudell Hall 212.
Buffalo State's Barnes and Nobel Bookstore had a table set up for anyone interested in
purchasing a copy of "Fitz," and for a book signing.
The book tells the story of a 15-year-old boy who coerces the father he's never met to spend
a day with him-at gunpoint. Knopf executive editor Erin Clarke called the book "a taut,
heartwarming novel...full of characters you will quickly come to love."
Dr. Tom Reigstad, an English professor, coordinated this event with Dr. Adrienne Costello
of the English department. They both invited Cochrane to speak for their classes, since their
students are required to read "Fitz" this semester.
Reigstad said he thought it would be neat to have his students meet the author first-hand
and hopes they will learn a lot from him.
"Our education students will have an opportunity to hear Dr. Cochrane talk about his new
young adult novel and about his writing process," he said. "The subject matter of the novel
is extremely relevant to current issues in gun control too, since the story involves a 15-
year-old character with a gun."
As stated in a press release, Cochrane is a professor of English and the Lowery Writer-
in-Residence at Canisius College, where he has three times been named Peter Canisius
Distinguished Teaching Professor. He teaches courses in writing and literature, directs the
creative writing program, and coordinates the Contemporary Writers Series.
"For a writer it is always a great pleasure to meet with serious readers and other writers,"
Cochrane said.
This is not Cochrane's first visit to Buffalo State, and he said he was "deeply impressed" by
the "warmth and curiosity" of the students on campus.
English department chair Ralph Wahlstrom said that although he did not coordinate the
event he still knows and admires Cochrane.
Reigstad said he will have his students complete projects related to Fitz stemming from
Cochrane's visit.
"In my ENG 309 class students will create a two-day detailed lesson plan involving writing
activities connected to 'Fitz,'" he said. "Our students have heard an on-air radio interview
with Cochrane in December, but they are excited about the prospect of meeting and talking
to the author in person."
Cochrane shared excerpts of "Fitz", talking about "the centrality of storytelling in our lives
and our human need to tell and hear stories in order to make sense of our lives."
