Buffalo State's radio station has much to offer

I don't know about you, but when it's seven in the morning I don't want top 40 hits blasting in my ears. So when I make my morning drive to work, I listen to 91.3 FM. If you are unaware of what this is, it is Buffalo State College's very own student-run radio station.

I've been attending Buffalo State College for two and half years now and never really thought to check it out until I brought my car to school. While scanning the car radio channels on the way to class I was surprised to hear, "funded by Buffalo State College's student activity fee." I've been hooked on 91.3 FM ever since.

I don't know if it's magic or if the deejays just know what the average person wants to hear, but they always manage to play the right music at the right time. For instance, on a Sunday evening when a BSC student is recovering from the weekend or simply catching up on homework, 91.3 plays Reggae music from 6 to 9 p.m. Reggae is the perfectly music people need on a Sunday night when trying to mentally and physically prepare themselves for the week ahead.

Unlike other radio stations like 101.1 FM, which plays the top 40 hits, or 93.7 FM, which only plays hip hop and R&B, 91.3 plays alternative music. Ryan Howze, one of the student deejays, also known as DJ Arehouse, said, "If you hear it on TV or other radio stations, you won't hear it on 91.3. We stay away from the top 40 hits."

That's what is so great about the BSC radio station; they don't play the usual stuff.  They're different. They play music that I want to immediately run home and download.

They also play throwbacks like Everlast. I had just recently downloaded a remix to the song "Hits Me Like Rock" by CSS. While I was driving to work the original was playing on 91.3, I thought to myself, "This is awesome."

Even if you aren't in your car, or don't even have a car, 91.3 is played through live streaming on their website (http://www.buffalostate.edu/wbny/webradio).

The station's online live streaming makes 91.3 available to everyone, but most importantly, to BSC students. On Thursdays at around 11 p.m. DJ Arehouse plays dubstep. On Friday nights, during the Aaron show, electronic music is featured. Since dubstep and electronic music are all the rage these days among college students, why not support your school radio station by listening to one of your fellow classmates play your favorite beats?

What better way to hear new songs or listen to your favorites than through your own school radio? 91.3 FM plays music 24/7 and has a little something for everyone's taste.

The best part is you'll never hear the same song twice. To me, 91.3 FM is Buffalo's best radio station.
