Future students get first taste of college

Buffalo State played host to future students and their parents during a three-day Class Visit
Program last week.
Already accepted students attended classes April 3-5 while their parents attended panel
discussions about the school. Students and parents were then given campus tours.
According to Kenneth Robinson, admissions advisor and coordinator of the class visits, the
program left a positive impression.
"The Class Visit is especially unique, since it gives accepted students an opportunity to
experience what it's like to be a college student at Buffalo State," Robinson said. "I call it the test
drive."
Robinson said that throughout the years the college has had a Class Visit Program. The
feedback from students and parents has been 80 to 90 percent positive, for which the panel
discussion gets some credit.
"We know parents are integrally involved in students' choosing a college, which is also backed-
up by national data," he said. "That is why our Q&A panel discussion is designed for them."
During this panel discussion, parents may ask questions of representatives from Financial Aid,
University College, the Career Development Center, Residence Life, and the University Police
Department.
Margaret Loops, senior advisor of financial aid, Dr. Heather Maldonado, assistant dean of
University College, Peter Carey, chief of the University Police Department, Curtis Brickhouse,
associate director of Residence Life and Stephanie Zuckerman-Aviles, director of the Career
Development Center are just a few of the many panelists who answered parents' questions.
Students were also able to sit in on the Honors 400 Coloquium course with Dr. Andrea Guiati,
director of the All-College Honors Program.
Robinson said that the Class Visit Program does have positive effects on enrollment. He
said that over the past five years, two-thirds of the students who participate in the class visits
committed to Buffalo State as their college choice.
"Ultimately, students and parents want a college that is affordable where students can learn
and grow," he said. "The Class Visit drives these points home. The national average shows that
students and parents will only visit three colleges, so we have a 33 percent chance of getting
them after a visit."
On the last day of the program, Carmela Thompson, director of the admissions office, welcomed
the students and parents to campus and thanked them for considering Buffalo State as an
option for their future.
"Academically, you know that Buffalo State is a great school, but we want this experience today
to help demonstrate just how great we are," she said, addressing the visitors. "One way we
feel very confident that we can get that message to you is to have you engage in the classroom
experience, sitting with other Buff State students in a real classroom setting."
After she raffled off some prizes to the students, Thompson introduced a special speaker, Judge
Jeannette Ogden. As a Buffalo State alumnus, Ogden talked to students about her successful
career as a judge, serving on the Buffalo City Court, the Acting County Court and Acting Family
Court.
Ogden told students about how she got started at Buffalo State as a criminal justice major and
why she attributes many of her accomplishments to her Buffalo State experience.
"Because of Buff State, I was able to reach my dream and become a lawyer," she said.
"Because of Buff State, I'm a judge and as a judge I see the results of poor choices. So,
because of Buffalo State, I can competently say to you, if I can do it, so can you."
Ogden said that as an alumnus, she is proud of her school and is thankful for the opportunities
she had when she was a student here.
"I always feel very honored when they invite me to come and encourage students to come to
Buffalo State," she said. "I think it's a good choice."
