The Buffalo State men's soccer team split a pair of games this past week, picking up its first win
of the season in a 5-1 decision over D'Youville on Wednesday before dropping a home game to
Daemen College on Saturday.
According to head coach Rudy Pompert, the team made strides over the course of the week and
appears to be coming together at the right time.
"We looked good both games, I saw a lot of improvement in our game that showed we have
made strides, and I'm seeing what we worked on in practice translating to the field," Pompert
said. "I'm excited for what the future holds."
On Wednesday, the Bengals (1-5) scored four goals in the first half to take a 4-0 halftime lead
and never looked back, cruising to a 5-1 win over D'Youville.
The Bengals outshot the Spartans, 25-7. C.J. Scirto and Chris Haney both scored a pair of goals
in the win. Andrew Dugan also scored, his first goal of the season for the Bengals.
Goalkeeper Ian Huntoon made three saves on four shots on net for the Bengals to earn his first
win of the season.
Saturday, on the other hand, went a little differently for the Bengals. The Bengals lost five of
their starters in the game's first twenty minutes of the game in the 2-1 loss to Daemen.
Daemen's Josh Radecki scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute for the visiting
Wildcats.
Manny Lukwiya scored the lone goal for the Bengals before leaving due to injury in the first
half.
The Wildcats outshot the Bengals, 12-9 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Huntoon finished with six saves for the Bengals after starting goalkeeper Ben Spilman left due to
injury.
Jake Reed, Jonathan Commisso and Dugan all left the game before its completion as well.
"It hurts when you lose five of your eleven starters especially after they all played well
Wednesday, but we have to re-group and get better because that's all we can do," assistant head
coach Michael Chieffo said.
Pompert is hoping his starters make a quick recovery.
"We hope to have him back along with all the others Friday, but if not, we have to move on with
who is healthy and that means numbers 11, 12, and on will have to step up for us," he said.
On a team that includes a lot of new faces and players that didn't play much last year, the depth
of the Bengals will be tested this week.
"I'm going to have to step up along with the rest of my teammates" said defender Brett Lanham,
who didn't play much last year but will be asked to play an increased role going forward due to
injuries.
Dugan sounded optimistic for his availability in the team's next game.
The Bengals will open their conference schedule against Brockport at 4 p.m. on Friday at Coyer
Field.
