Bengals complete rollercoaster two-win weekend

It was the type of week for Buffalo State women's lacrosse that elicited both extreme happiness and
extreme anger from the team.
The happiness came in a dramatic 13-12 double-overtime win over Ithaca and a 22-11 bashing of
Oswego; the anger from an 18-9 blowout loss to Oneonta.
Against Ithaca, Buffalo State had their hands full with a squad coming off its first blowout loss of the
season, a 17-6 stomping by No. 3 Cortland.
The Bengals took an early 3-1 lead to put the pressure on Ithaca, but the Bombers didn't flinch. Two
quick goals tied the game at three in a sign of things to come.
The teams traded goals over the final 14 minutes of the first half en route to a 6-6 tie at the break.
The Bengals seemed to be on the verge of pulling away midway through the second half when Karen
Shaddock, who recorded a game-high seven goals, scored back-to-back markers to give Buffalo State
a 9-7 lead with just 13 minutes remaining. However, the Bombers weren't going to go away that easy.
In a three-minute span, Ithaca turned a two-goal deficit into a one-goal advantage with just over nine
minutes to play.
The Bombers nearly added to their lead, but Bengals goaltender Colleen George came up with two huge
saves to keep the deficit at one. George, who finished with 13 saves, said she knew how important those
saves were and that it "seemed to change the momentum a bit".
Coach Meg Stevens was even happier with her goaltender's performance.
"She stepped up today. It was another game where she made a big difference for our team," Stevens
said.
Still trailing by one, things looked bleak for the Bengals. That was until Jenn Shaddock hit a shot with just
three minutes left to tie the game at 10 and send it into overtime.
Karen Shaddock scored just 35 seconds into the overtime period to give the Bengals an 11-10 lead, but
the Bombers came back just 23 seconds later to tie things up again on a goal by Tracy Rivas, her fourth
of the game.
Brittany Nagowski scored a goal to put the Bengals back in front with 1:46 left in the period, but Ithaca
forced a turnover and tied the game back up with just seven seconds left to force an extra stanza.
It didn't last very long.
Just 36 seconds in, Ashley Caporizzo capped off her three-goal performance with the game-winner,
catapulting the Bengals to victory in their final non-conference game of the season.
"I can't think of a better way to do it," Stevens said on preparing for conference games. "You can't ask
for a better way."
In a game that was tied nine times, Stevens felt it was a good team win.
"It was a great character game for us. We stayed with it," Stevens said. "(It) was eyes on the prize. It's
impressive when you can go back and forth like that."
A scary moment occurred late in the game when senior Kendyl Clarkson was driving to the net when she
got knocked down hard by an Ithaca defender. Clarkson left the game with a shoulder injury.
After the game Stevens simply said that her "fingers were crossed" on the severity of Clarkson's injury.
For as high as the team felt after their huge win over Ithaca, the low was even worse after Sunday's
SUNYAC opener against Oneonta.
The team received good news before the game. Clarkson's injury wasn't as serious as first thought and
she was back in the lineup for the Bengals. However, it didn't seem to matter.
"They came out flying, and we came out flat," Stevens said. "It's hard to win when you play like that."
The Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 44 seconds into the game and never looked back, gaining
a 5-1 lead halfway through the first half.
Oneonta had a 10-3 lead late in the first half, but the Bengals scored three of the last four goals of the
half to cut the deficit to 11-6 at halftime.
Buffalo State pulled within four at 12-8 with 23 minutes left, but it was as close as they would come.
Oneonta went on a 5-0 run to up the score to 17-8 on their way to the eventual 18-9 final.
"We didn't play well and we got beat," Stevens said.
Karen Shaddock, who scored three goals in the loss, was even more disappointed, saying that it hurt the
team's confidence "a ton."
"To come off a big win like that and lose the way we did just sucks," she said. "We have to be prepared."
Attacker Becca Martinez agreed with Shaddock.
"It just goes to show you that any team can be beaten on any given day," Shaddock said. "We don't
want that to happen to us again.
"We need to stay composed and not let the little mistakes bring us down."
The Bengals continue the conference portion of their schedule when they visit No. 3 Cortland on
Saturday and play host to Fredonia at Coyer Field on Tuesday, April 10th at 4 p.m.
