Ngabo and Brooks lead Bengals' runners

The Buffalo State men's and women's cross country teams took to the road last Saturday to
Oberlin College (Ohio). The teams took part in the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble, their final
tune-up meet before the SUNYAC Championship meet at Fredonia.
The meet was all about improvement for the Bengals, who sported personal records all across
the team as they prepare for the stretch run of the 2012 season. Coach Dustin Dimit was very
pleased with his team's performance on Saturday.
"The whole team stepped up this weekend, no one person really stood out - this is the first
year we had anyone break twenty six minutes (in the 8K run) and we had four guys break that
mark yesterday," Dimit said of his men's team.
"The women came out strong as well. Since I have been here I have only seen two girls break 24
minutes in a 6K and we had four girls do it there and two girls came within ten seconds of the
school record."
Freshman Alex Ngabo topped the finishers for the men's team, placing 35th of 275 runners
in the 8K (25:09). Teammates Bumkoth Jiak and Arturo Salas finished 56th (25:33) and
73rd (25:46), respectively.
Ngabo brought home Buffalo State Athlete of the Week honors as his time in the 8K course set
a Bengals' record - a record that has been around as far back as the 1960s.
"I feel really good, it's all coming together. It's what I have been waiting for," Ngabo said of his
big day. "I'm excited for SUNYACS. I'd like to finish top five overall and as a team I'd like us to
finish in at least second."
The men finished 12th of 32 teams in the meet.
The women finished a bit behind the men in terms of overall standing, finishing 19th of 30
teams.
Sophomore co-captain Sabrina Brooks placed 94th of 270 total runners in the 6k (23:22), while
teammates Victoria DeStefano and Rachel Parker finished promptly behind. DeStefano finished
95th (23:24) and Parker 123rd (23:57).
Brooks sees this meet as just the beginning for a Bengals' squad that is considered to be
rebuilding.
"I think everyone was just happy because our whole entire team moved up," Brooks said. "We
had three girls in the 23 minute range while another one of our girls missed it by a second. Our
whole pack is moving up so I think that SUNYACs should be good."
With the SUNYAC championships right around the corner, Dimit feels that his teams are hitting
their stride at just the right time.
"This is the time of year we should start running fast with how our training has shifted the last
couple of weeks," Dimit said. "We tell everyone at the beginning of the season that this is the
week we should start running fast in preparation for conferences and regionals - they came
through and everything is right on schedule like we expected."
Both teams will travel to Fredonia Oct. 27 to participate in the SUNYAC Championships.
