USG moves representative elections to Bengal Connect

With United Students Government elections underway for the upcoming
academic year, representatives are not only excited about the prospect of new
responsibilities, but the utilization of paperless polls as well.
This semester marks the first year USG elections are being held on Bengal Connect
rather than traditional paper ballot polls in the Campbell Student Union. To vote,
students must now log in to bengalconnect.com using their Buffalo State student
user name and password and then click "Vote Now" on the home page to access the
ballot.
USG Program Coordinator Lynn Korn said elections were moved online to save
money, reduce human error and make elections more accessible to students. This
way students can vote 24 hours a day, from anywhere on or off campus without
needing to carry ID.
"Bengal Connect is the new system we're trying to get things on," Korn said. "The
system will know whether you're a student or not, and it makes sure you can only
vote once. It's helpful to have a resource like that, especially with the construction
going on."
Since many current USG representatives are seniors set to graduate in May, a
number of candidates are looking to move into new positions. Still, many in USG are
staying optimistic about the prospect of working with new people.
"I think it will work out really well for the organization," said USG President Sara
Garfinkle, who is running unopposed for re-election. "It will bring a different
dynamic to USG, and it's going to be interesting to see how the elections turn out,
who's in what position and build on it from there. I think that it's always good to
have new faces."
One of those hoping to take on new responsibilities is Vice-Treasurer Justine
Britten.
Britten, a freshman, is running against Miguel Pereira for the position of USG
treasurer and is looking to take over for Josh Lipka after serving as treasurer for the
past two years.
"I'm excited actually, if I do get the position, to work with a new group of people,"
Britten said. "I just hope everything works out for the best. "
The elected representatives will be facing a number of salient issues next year,
including the proposed cutbacks to NFTA bus services, as well as the ongoing effects
of construction in the Science Building and Campbell Student Union.
In addition to this, Britten said she is hoping to tighten communication between USG
and student organizations so that organizations' needs can be better met.
"My main goal is to reach out to the organizations and actually go out there and see
what they're doing so I have a better sense, rather than what's written on paper, for
who to give what," Britten said. "That way when purchase orders come through I
can say: 'I know these organizations are doing what they're supposed to be doing.'"
Other positions at stake are associate vice president for communication, associate
vice president for student life, and seats on the College Senate, College Council,
Students Assembly and Auxiliary Services Advisory Committee. Polls will be open
until 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, and election results are set to be posted on USG's
website, usgbuffstate.org, by 9 p.m. that night.
