Construction forces organizations to search for event space

Many student organizations find themselves searching for event space now that renovations in the
Campbell Student Union have shut down the third floor.

The Assembly Hall, Fireside Lounge and Social Hall, all located on the third floor, are common rooms
often used to hold special events for organizations.

Annual events like the Caribbean Students Organization's Dolla Jam and SPIRIT Gospel Choir's Revival
are usually held in the Social and Assembly Halls.

Tanya Campbell, president of the National Society of Black Engineers, said she finds the construction is
getting in the way of her organization's programming and regular attendance.

"Some of my members said they did not come to our meetings lately because of the confusing route to get
to the game room," she said.

The union's central staircase is blocked off; students have to get to the game room by going through a
separate staircase and passageway.

"It is just inconvenient for everyone," Campbell said.

Bernadette Tribble, the associate manager of student events, says her administrative position has her
working with more people to help organizations find rooms in Rockwell Hall, Bulger Communication
Center and even the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The Houston Gym can also provide some space,
but this is difficult for two reasons: the schedule of open recreation is non-negotiable, and the gym will
undergo renovation beginning in August. Some rooms, such as the game room, are still available for the
next month, but organizations are starting to feel the burden of having to find new locations, she said.

"We are starting to see the effects of the construction in the Union right now," Tribble said.
"Even though the rooms are still available right now, everyone is coming to the realization that it is
quickly ending."

The Pan-African Students Organization and Black Active Minds are two more examples of
organizations that hold their annual culture show and pageant every April in the Social Hall.

Because of construction, both events had to be moved to Rockwell Hall within the same
weekend this year. Due to the limited availability, organizations should try to schedule events
close together, Tribble said.

The best thing organizations can do is plan ahead, she said.

"Everyone needs to think ahead. Instead of thinking about next semester, they should be thinking of
spaces for next spring," Tribble said.

The construction has also limited the number of tables that organizations can set up to promote their
programs during Bengal Pause, said Sara Garfinkle, president of United Students Government.

"We have to get creative and think outside of the box in terms of spacing," Garfinkle said. "We can still
set up tables by the bookstore, but we just need to work with what we have."

Garfinkle said the presidents of all the organizations met on March 26 and determined how they will find
space for their offices next year.

Some students like Campbell said planning ahead should not be a quick solution offered for a problem
that was not their fault in the first place.

"It is not fair we have to make these adjustments and have our members suffer because of construction
they chose to do," Campbell said.
