When elected officers of United Students Government take office June 1, one of their
main goals will be to get student voices heard by Buffalo State administration.

Muhammed Sumbundu, elected College Council member, said he strives to make
sure student opinion is a priority and will make decisions based on the feedback he
receives.

"My goal is to be a voice," Sumbundu said. "I want to make sure students have a
voice in the decisions that are being made at this college. My goal is to advocate on
behalf of students to show that students are the number one priority and why this
place exists."

One of the most important methods of communication USG used this year was
electronic surveys, USG President Sara Garfinkle said. USG sent out three major
surveys this year about Bengal Pause, Spring Fest and NFTA summer bus passes
in order to get direct student feedback. Garfinkle said the Spring Fest survey was a
success with over 9,500 student responses.

Sumbundu said survey results are used to ensure students' interests are being fairly
represented. USG takes the results to the administration in order to show what
students are looking for as well as how many students vote for certain topics.

Sumbundu will also be concentrating on getting student opinions through various
surveys. He believes it is important for students to be involved with the decision-
making process so that students are getting the best outcomes.

Another goal for the elected officers is to develop communication between USG, the
students and the organizations on campus.

Andrea Wright, elected associate vice president for student life, said she will be
focusing on advertising for programs next year.

"Students complain that there are not enough programs," she said. "There are
programs, but USG just needs to find a way to market them."

Wright said she plans on using more methods of communication in order to spread
the word about programs. Wright wants to incorporate advertising through email,
Facebook, Bengal Connect and the Buffalo State website.

Justine Britten, elected USG treasurer, said she plans to be more in touch with
organizations and have them more involved in the budget-making process to make
sure organizations are being represented fairly.

"The organizations feel that we don't really know them on a personal level,"
Britten said. "Next year I am going to make it one of my top priorities to make
myself available and to go to the events and general interest meetings. I want to
concentrate on actually getting to know the organizations and their executive
boards."

Other concerns Garfinkle has for next year include the renovations to the Campbell
Student Union and the NFTA results. The Union renovations are a challenge and
leave room for opportunity, Garfinkle said. She has already started talking with
administration about more programming space students could use on campus for
next year to ensure programs have great attendance.

"With NFTA, it is important to get the survey results from the students to see what
they want such as summer bus passes, Garfinkle said."

USG has still not come to an agreement with NFTA for the price of bus passes or the
route cutbacks that are in place.
