SUNYAC not kind to Bengals

The Buffalo State women's lacrosse team entered the holiday weekend seeking to end its poor start
against SUNYAC opponents. Instead, the team lost its games on Saturday and Tuesday by a combined
score of 37-22.
The Bengals were coming off a 22-11 trouncing of Oswego last week, but instead of building on their
momentum, they lost 22-11 on the road to No. 2 Cortland before falling 15-11 to Fredonia at Bengal
Field.
Buffalo State dropped to 1-3 in conference play.
"It's extremely frustrating," said Karen Shaddock, who led the Bengals with five goals. "I'm one of the
sorest losers, so to me this isn't fun."
"It's on us," coach Meg Stevens said. "We need to put together a full 60 minutes - everybody."
The team's inability to piece together a complete game has cost the Bengals victories on more than one
occasion this season.
The game was a back-and-forth contest for the first 30 minutes, but Cortland took over in the second
half.
The Red Dragons scored the game's first three goals in the opening 12 minutes in what seemed like the
start of a one-sided affair, but the Bengals fought back.
Shaddock, Kendyl Clarkson, and Ashley Caporizzo each tallied a goal in a 1:51 span to tie the game at
three midway through the first half.
Caporizzo scored four times for Buffalo State while Clarkson finished with just one.
After giving up another three goal run to Cortland, the Bengals battled back to within one on back-to-
back goals by Shaddock to make it 6-5.
The teams traded goals for the next four scores, but Cortland scored twice in 37 seconds to extend its
lead to 10-7 late in the first. The Bengals cut the lead to two on Shaddock's fourth goal before the half
ended.
Becca Martinez scored 18 seconds into the second half to pull the Bengals within one, 10-9.
Unfortunately for Buffalo State, that was as close as they would come the rest of the way.
"We just gave up to them. We need to get everyone on the same page," Shaddock said, adding that
practice hadn't been as consistent as they wanted and that it needed to be better.
Led by three goals from Maria Di Fato, the Red Dragons went on a 6-0 run early in the second to make
the score 16-9.
Goals from Shaddock and Caporizzo cut the lead to 16-11, but Cortland would again go on a 6-0 run to
increase the score to 22-11.
"We just lost all momentum," Martinez said.
The Bengals trailed the entire game Tuesday, falling 2-0 before cutting the Fredonia lead to 6-5 - the
closest Buffalo State would come to taking the lead. Karen Shaddock had three goals and one assist and
the Blue Devils outscored the Bengals 9-6 in the second half to win their seventh consecutive game.
"We've got some defensive issues," Stevens said. "I'm still confident in all our players. It's consistency.
We've got all of the pieces, we just need to put it together in games and in practice. Maybe we needed
to be backed into a corner in order to play better."
Martinez believed that the team is still confident.
"We need to stay together as a team," she said. "We know we can make a run, now we just have to do
it."
Buffalo State gets a week off before continuing its conference play Tuesday at home against rival
Geneseo at 4 pm.
