Track sprints out of starting blocks

If Saturday's meet at Nazareth College was any indication of what's to come for the Buffalo State men's
and women's track and field teams this outdoor season, they should be in for a successful spring.

In their first meet of the outdoor season, the Bengals performed at the inaugural Nazareth/ROC City
Classic meet. The teams had nine first-place individual finishes and posted three new school records, but
the coaching staff wasn't surprised at such a strong performance.

"It was the first time they were having this meet, so we weren't really sure who was going to be there,"
assistant coach Dustin Dimit said. "After we saw the entries and things, we knew we could win quite a
few events and place highly in some, and set some school records. Basically it's been almost a month
since our last race for a lot of the athletes in SUNYAC's, so, we just wanted to kind of shake the rust off a
little bit and set up the outdoor season."

Consider the rust shaken off. The men performed particularly well for the Bengals, leading the way with
five individual event wins and two new school records.

Freshman Alex Ngabo broke a 31-year-old school record in the 1,500-meter run en route to a second
place finish in the event (3:59.69). Ngabo also came through with second place finishes in the 800
(1:55.16) and 5,000-meter runs (15:50.51).

Ngabo enjoyed the performance he had, but said that he can do more to achieve first place finishes and
is confident about attacking the record again.

"I'm excited about breaking the record, but it was just a matter of time before I could break it, and I'm
going to break it again," Ngabo said.

Junior thrower Jordan Fuentes is the other new record-holder for the men. He was the top finisher in
the discus (45.79m).

Rounding out the first-place finishes were senior Davon Rollins in the 100-meter dash (11.21), freshman
Matt Allen taking home the pole vault (4.25m), senior Kyle Abron ousting everyone in the triple jump
(13.34m), and sophomore Nick Fresco in the shot put (14.19m). Fresco was also third in the hammer
throw (41.29m).

Other good performances of the day were provided by senior middle distance runner Tim Fargino, who

placed second in the 400-meter run (50.22), and sophomore Ron Major, who contributed a second place
finish in the high jump (1.80m).

The women also fared well Saturday. On top of breaking a school record of their own, they had four
individual winners.

Freshman Sabrina Brooks carved her name into the record books after winning the 5,000-meter run
(19:06.45). She also had a second-place performance in the 1,500-meter run (4:58.41). It was also a
successful day for sophomore jumper Alexis Whelan. She had a top-finish in the triple jump (11.02m)
and came up just short of first in the long jump, finishing second (4.99m).

Whelan noted that she wasn't necessarily expecting to jump as well as she did, but said she knows the
importance of starting the season off on the right foot.

"I was just hoping to do well," Whelan said. "I knew the weather was going to be kind of windy, so I was
trying to factor that into everything. But I was hoping to do well, I mean, the first meet you want to kind
of get out there and do the best you can so the rest of your season will go well."

A pair of sprinters also gave the Bengals first-place finishes. Freshman Nia Holmes won the 100-meter
dash (13.26) and junior Sasha Henry, who is looking to return to nationals this spring after qualifying for
them in the indoor season, claimed the win in the 200-meter dash (25.70).

Freshman distance runner Ana Rivera made her own claim to fame at the meet, giving the Bengals
second-place finishes in the 400 and 800-meter runs with times of 1 minute, 0.58 seconds, and 2
minutes, 21.54 seconds, respectively.

The Bengals will travel to the University of Tennessee next weekend for a meet that will feature
Division-I schools, and will give the teams a chance to see how they match up with some of the nation's
top athletes. The meets are set for this Friday and Saturday.
