Keeper Huntoon's efforts overshadowed by lack of offense

The Buffalo State men's soccer team opened SUNY Athletic Conference play last weekend,
dropping a 1-0 decision to Brockport on Friday before drawing Geneseo 0-0 Saturday at Coyer
Field.
With the loss and the tie, the Bengals find themselves at the bottom of the SUNYAC standings
and looking up. The Bengals are 1-6 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
Despite his team's spot in the standings, head coach Rudy Pompert is optimistic about its future.
"I thought we played hard and solid both games and mistake free except for one time (against)
Brockport," Pompert said. "We've seemed to have the right mentality and attitude these last
couple games; we just have to turn them into wins."
The one mistake was when the Bengals allowed Brockport's Kevin Dorn to score in the game's
4th minute. Dorn scored over Bengals' goalkeeper Ian Huntoon to give Brockport the lead with
the eventual game-winning goal.
"We really have worked on playing mistake free soccer but for some reason the team didn't
come out with that fire right out the gates," assistant coach Michael Chieffo said. "They picked
up the slack for the rest of the game but that one play was what hurt us obviously when you're
talking about a one goal game."
Defensemen Brett Lanham agreed with coach Chieffo.
"Early goal scoring has been an Achilles heel of this team so far and it starts with us on defense,"
Lanham said. "It's frustrating to give up a goal like that so early being down but we've got to
do a better job of getting the ball out of our end and to our forwards where they can then do
something with the ball."
Lanham also noted that the defense has underachieved and that they need to improve to be the
fast, physical and experienced unit that they know they can be.
Brockport outshot the Bengals 16-8 in the game. Huntoon made five saves for the Bengals, while
Brockport's Casey Sullivan made two to preserve the shutout for the Golden Eagles.
Saturday, both the Bengals and Geneseo played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, ending in a 0-0
tie.
Neither team created many scoring opportunities, even though Geneseo outshot the Bengals 18-
11. Eight of Geneseo's shots were on goal compared to the Bengals' two.
The Bengals displayed good defense when they eliminated a scoring chance for Geneseo after a
Bengals' defender cleared a loose ball that was in front of the Bengals' net.
Huntoon recorded eight saves for his first shutout of the season.
The Bengals were without captains Andrew Dugan and Jonathan Commmisso as well as
goalkeeper Ben Spilman. All three sat out with injuries.
"Not having Dugan and Commisso hurt us obviously, but we're optimistic about a lot of our
players who stepped up this weekend including Trevor O'Connor," Pompert said.
Pompert was also optimistic about Dugan returning later this week but wasn't so sure about
Commisso, who looks like will be out for an extended period of time.
The Bengals will hit the road to take on Roberts-Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Wednesday night before
visiting Fredonia at 1 p.m. Saturday to continue the conference portion of their schedule.
