The Buffalo State women's volleyball team is rolling. With a three-game sweep of Geneseo, Brockport
and Fredonia over the weekend in the opening round of SUNYAC pool play, the Bengals (14-3, 3-0
SUNYAC) have won eight matches in a row.
"We prepared really well for the weekend and the girls knew what each team's game plan was and how
to beat each team, and they just went out there and they got the job done," head coach Maria DePeters
said.
Not only have the Bengals been prepared for opponent's styles during their winning streak, but they
have also been able to stick together during rough patches to persevere past them.
"One of the main reasons we're doing so well is just our team chemistry," junior Kelsey Bashore said. "I
feel that we all get along really well, and we all play with a lot of heart, and it takes a lot for a team to
accomplish that sort of community, just being together, and love being together.
"When you have team chemistry like that on the court, it definitely shows when games get tight, or
when they're close, it's the team that has the most heart that pulls through."
The Bengals defeated Geneseo convincingly Friday, winning in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-13.
Sophomore Sam Parente led the attack with 10 kills. Bashore contributed 30 assists and 17 digs and
fellow junior Chelsea Moore served three aces to go with six digs.
On Saturday, the Bengals also swept Oswego, 25-12, 25-16 and 25-12. Parente again had a team-high
in kills with 13. Junior Sarah Horvath aided the offense with five kills and with four aces. Bashore and
Moore had 12 and 14 digs, respectively.
DePeters noted the versatility and importance Bashore had to the team's offense over the weekend.
"(Bashore) almost always has control of that second ball, and she's the one that controls the speed and
tempo of our offense," she said. "So, when she's out there, she's strong and composed, and plays with a
lot of attitude and force. She brings a lot of energy to the team and did a great job this weekend."
In the second game Saturday, the team lost its only set of the weekend, but recovered from it to score
the win, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22 and 25-16. Parente again paced the offense, recording 15 more kills en
route to being named Buffalo State Athlete of the Week. She finished the weekend with a combined 38
kills and .507 hitting percentage while committing just two errors.
Horvath was versatile in the match, finishing with seven kills, 16 digs and four blocks, while Bashore had
35 assists.
The Bengals, sitting atop the SUNYAC West division, are getting into a comfortable rhythm as a team.
"I think it shows how dedicated we are and as a team, how we're improving constantly," Parente
said. "Just in this year and (last year), we're just getting better and better."
Bashore said some the team's preseason goals included going undefeated in conference play, which
in turn, would accomplish another goal of hosting the SUNYAC playoffs. They are in a great position to
achieve those feats, with the next and final three games of conference pool play set for Oct. 19 and 20.
"Going undefeated (this weekend) definitely gives us a better chance of hosting playoffs, and that's
really important to us," Bashore said. "So we kind of just went in with the mentality that we have to win,
there's no other option."
DePeters credits the hot in-conference start to the strength of the out-of-conference schedule, as the
Bengals are starting to build a winning identity.
"It definitely says that Buffalo State volleyball has a new culture here and that we're a good team and
we're a force to be reckoned with," DePeters said. "And I think that our competition that we've played
thus far throughout the season to get us to this point definitely helped with how well we produced at
SUNYAC's."
The Bengals will put their hot streak on the line when they visit Daemen at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
