Dedication pays off with inspiring trip to NYC
By The Record Staff

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in what served as a cultural melting pot. Yellow cabs littered
the streets. It was street vendors and performers galore, and Cookie Monster donned a tips satchel and
paraded around the area, taking pictures with tourists.
After an incommodious nine-hour train ride, we were there.
Five members of The Record's editorial staff had arrived in Times Square for the 2013 College Media
Convention over the weekend.
We left Pennsylvania Station after several unsuccessful attempts to flag down a cab. The mere thought
of lugging our bags around in the light rain was irritating, but we started our 20-block hike up 8th
Avenue nonetheless.
Forced to stop at seemingly every crosswalk and strategically dodge every comedy show salesman in our
path, our arms ached from carrying our bags. The trek was, for the most part, a hindrance.
Until we took a moment to absorb our surroundings.
Staring at us from across 8th was a glorious structure decorated with a black, recognizable, old English
type that read "The New York Times."
An awe-inspiring building for journalists, its monumental architecture served as a reminder that after
college, our aspirations can take us to amazing places.
Yours can too.
For many, attending class is enough. But it's not. The extra work you put into your field - internships,
organizations, conventions, etc. - is crucial to advancing professionally, making each additional
experience completely worth your time.
The convention's seminars proved to be an effective way to network, gain insight and meet some of the
people we admire professionally, including past and present reporters for the New York Times and co-
host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Willie Geist, who gave the keynote.
Geist spoke about the importance of setting yourself apart from others professionally. Many times, a
college degree isn't enough. Potential employers are looking for more experience, more originality and
more punch to go with those degrees.
As such, we urge you to get more involved in your field while you're in college. View your time at Buffalo
State not only as an educational platform, but also as a springboard to begin your quest in carving out a
career niche. Decorate your degree with an ambitious attitude and a plethora of experience.
Our trip to the Big Apple may have been expensive, but it was an unbelievably rewarding trip on
professional, social and educational grounds. No matter your field of study, chase your career ambitions
at every opportunity.
Consider the effort you put forth in college to be a long, tiresome walk up 8th Avenue, and your
endgame - your ultimate career goals - to be your arrival at the Times Square Building. Trust us when
we say that it's an incredibly enriching experience.
