Down the runway they go

The fashion textile and technology department's biggest event, Runway 5.0, is fast approaching.
Runway 5.0 is a fashion show that presents an opportunity for the student designers at Buffalo
State College to show off their ideas.

This year's theme is synthesis, which is defined as the combining of separate elements or
substances to form a coherent whole. Students taking part in the show must combine different
styles when finishing their designs.

The theme was taken from Worth Global Sourcing Network, which is a top fashion forecasting
website.

According to FTT professor Elaine Polvinen, student designers must also incorporate one of
three WGSN spring/summer 2012 inspiration directions, including JPG GEN, primal futurism
and cinematic, into their overall designs. Previews of the designs were showcased to the textile
department's staff, which selected the strongest designs for final showing.

Senior designer Kendra Folsom offered an idea of what we can expect from her collection.
"A natural feel in prints and colors, natural like leaves and cave paintings," she said.
Folsom said that primal futurism really spoke to and inspired her. She said she also tried to play
her look off of the WGSN stylistic direction.

Although all the students have one central theme, their design and inspiration ideas are diversely
unique. Gwendolyn Smith describes her look as, "activewear meets sportswear," and said she got
her inspiration from skateboarding.

Runway hasn't always been just for student designers. The first Runway also included designers
and clothing from local area stores. Over the past four years it has evolved into just student
designers. Last year's event, Runway 4.0, was the first year that featured all student designers.

This year's Runway will add a new twist, as well. For the first time, LED lighting inspired by
concerts will be used to add to the show.

The event mainly highlights senior designers, but students in lower classes may also participate.
The Runway shows are a combination of two classes at Buffalo State, including FTT 452,
fashion show production, and FTT 451, which is the senior production class. Professor Erin
Habes teaches FTT 452 and plays a large role in the Runway production.

Habes said the concept of Runway was inspired by fashion New York's popular NY Fashion
Week.

The runway event will be taking place at the Pierce Arrow Building at 1685 Elmwood Ave. for
its third year in a row. The event was previously held at the Albright Knox and the Burchfield
Penney Art Center, but has moved to a larger venue to accommodate a larger crowd.

According to Polvinen, the event has been able to give away a number of scholarships to the
fashion students designing for runway.

"FTT hopes that with continued sponsorship support and annual Runway ticket sales the
program can offer up to ten $1000 student scholarship per year," Polvinen said.

This year, Polvinen said Taco Bell will be sponsoring the events and hopefully that will bring in
enough revenue for FTT's scholarship goal.

There will be two shows on Saturday, the first at 3 p.m., for which tickets can be purchased for
$20. Tickets for the later show, which starts at 8 p.m., cost $30.

VIP tickets can also be purchased for $100 for the 8 p.m. showing. VIP tickets allow the
purchaser to consume alcoholic beverages and come with a Swag Bag, which includes sponsor
products and a t-shirt. All tickets can be purchased at Wegmans or the Rockwell Hall ticket
office. More information about the event can be found at bscrunway.com.
