Food expert satisfies his crowd

When it comes to health and food, we have many preconceived notions about what is and
isn't healthy, how we should go about feeding ourselves, and what is defined as important,
based on many things that we have been widely misinformed about. Alton Brown came to
Buffalo State to help set things straight.
Brown spoke about many different topics relative to food, family, health, comical anecdotes
and common misunderstandings about food in a presentation conveniently named "10
Things About Food I Feel Pretty Sure About."
Chosen by the United Students Government to be speaker for Spring 2012 as funded by
the mandatory student fee, he is known as a notable author, insightful chef, and television
personality best recognized for his Food Network show "Good Eats."
Brown came to Buffalo State to give students and members of the community an idea of the
honest things he has learned about food throughout his life.
Around four minutes into the show, Brown openly admitted that his show is constantly
changing as his work changes.
"I give this lecture, and I have been working on it for a few years. I work on it even when
I'm not giving it, but the problem is that it constantly changes, so I decided to speak about
the 10 things I'm pretty sure I'm sure about food...this week," Brown said.
He included messages ranging from the kitchen table being the important tool in the
kitchen, to the practical advice that eating anything bigger than our head may not be the
best idea, as well as some tips on eating cheaply while enrolled in college.
Brown told of the opportunity for free food on Fridays and Saturdays at most art museums
and even joked about the idea of getting a free meal from an elderly person who may have
the illusion that you're their offspring.
Before the presentation, Brown met some students, faculty, and United Student
Government members at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
USG members Nikkia Alvarez and Deni Desland, freshmen at Buffalo State, said "[We]
wanted to meet him. We've seen his show Good Eats a few times and thought it would be
fun."
Hospitality students had the opportunity to display their talents at the meet-and-greet
ceremony, with gourmet meals and mixed beverages. The attendees shared laughs, hugs,
and photographs with Brown.
Vanessa Jackson, a junior at Buffalo State, said "I had a general interest in attending when a
friend invited me. I figured it would be a good experience for me."
Following the show, a question and answer session began, with audience members asking
questions and receiving advice, a short story, and even occasional lighthearted mockery.
Still, the environment remained an honest and open one.
"Honorarium," Brown said with laughter when asked what inspired him to create his
presentation. "I just like making lists, and I had been working on this list about food for a
long time."
