USG budget conditionally approved

The United Students Government proposed budget has been submitted for approval by school
President Aaron Podolefsky, leaving some student organizations unhappy.
The proposed budget is for $1.4 million, roughly the same as last year's budget. Several attempts
to obtain a copy of the proposed budget were unsuccessful.
The budget process begins in February, when USG holds a meeting with its member
organizations to train them on the process, said last year's USG treasurer Josh Lipka. Budget
packets are distributed to the organizations with a set deadline on when the budgets need to be
turned in. After they are turned in, the budget committee reviews the packets and determines
what the budget will be.
If the organizations have an issue with their allotment, they can meet with the budget committee,
Lipka said. The budget is then re-examined by the committee, proposed to the senate and sent to
the president for approval.
Not all student organizations are happy with their budgets. The men's rugby team had $4,000 cut
out of their budget for next year, said team treasurer Adam Wenig. Despite several meetings with
the budget committee, it's still unclear why so much money was cut from the team's budget, he
said.
"We have had a few meetings and we were very professional about it," he said, "but we never got a
reason on why it was cut."
The team expected some money to be cut, after they failed to spend $1,000 of their last budget, Wenig
said, but $4,000 seemed like a lot.
"Usually if you fail to spend your full budget you're penalized a small amount, or the amount you didn't
spend," he said.
While Lipka refused to comment on specific student organizations, those who wanted to meet with
the budget committee, treasurer, vice treasurer or senate were able to do so, he said. While some
organizations may be upset with their budget, most are content.
"In the four years I have been on USG, I can say with confidence that some organizations will be
unhappy with anything USG does," Lipka said.
The budget cut will impact how the rugby team functions, Wenig said. The team travels and plays
schools like West Virginia University and the University of Kentucky.
"This budget cut will definitely hinder our ability to travel and (we'll have to) sacrifice games," he
said. "Without the money USG funds us with, we would not have the opportunity to play those schools."
