New faces make up USG Exec Board

The United Students Government's 36th Legislature's Executive Board will have a different look this fall,
with two new faces serving as interim executive vice president and treasurer.
Sara Garfinkle will return as the president of USG. Christina Germann will serve as interim executive vice
president and Justine Britten will serve as treasurer.
Britten served as vice treasurer under former treasurer Josh Lipka. The job has its challenges, Britten
said, but she's up for it.
"I must admit that transitioning into the position as treasurer from vice treasurer is a bit overwhelming,
but I am all for it," she said. "I am adjusting very smoothly and I am excited for the new year."
An issue that was brought up several times with her predecessor was communication, or lack thereof.
Britten said she plans on making open communication a tenet of her stay as treasurer.
"I plan to create a system of communication which I feel best works for the organizations and myself,"
she said. "I am making it my priority to leave no question unanswered and guarantee equality through
the organizations. I feel strongly about communication and will do all that it takes to stay connected
throughout this corporation."
Germann served as a senator before her new position, but said she looks forward to the responsibilities
her new position entails.
"Although being a senator is a prominent job within USG," she said, "vice president comes with a
greater amount of responsibility and I am working hard this summer in order to ensure I am fulfilling
each duty that being vice president entails."
One issue the board faces as a whole is the construction in the student union. Most USG programming
takes place in the space on the third floor now being worked on, leaving a dilemma on where to hold
events. However, space is being found, Garfinkle said.
"The union construction hinders programming space," she said. "We are being resourceful and looking
for other places to program."
While plans for specific events in the fall are still being laid out, the board plans on increasing student
awareness of USG, Britten said. This includes the placement of a new sign outside of the student union,
as well as other measures.
"A better marketing system is what we need and we plan to advertise tremendously so that USG is well
known by new students as well as those returning by the close of the Fall 2012 semester," she said.
As part of the marketing strategy, the board plans on making the use of Bengal Connect, a social media-
like site that allows students to keep up with USG and student organizations, more prevalent.
"This year we are trying to increase the use of Bengal Connect in order to benefit each student,"
Germann said.
Aside from marketing USG to students, the executive board plans on fostering good communication
between USG and the student organizations, and will continue to advocate for students, and more,
Germann said.
"One of my large goals for this upcoming semester is to advocate with the students at Buffalo State
College, not just for them," she said.
