CDC celebrates student employees

Buffalo State employees were celebrated last week as part of an annual
and nationwide recognition of all college employees.
The Career Development Center planned activities for April 8-12 including
a "Where's ORCA?" Facebook contest, free popcorn in the Campbell
Student Union and assistance in finding summer jobs. These events all led
up to the Student Employment Awards Reception on April 11.
Lynn Rogers, the student employment coordinator at the Career
Development Center, said that this was her fifth year being involved in the
planning of Student Employment Week.
Nominations for the Student Employee of the Year Award occur in January
and February. There is an undergraduate and graduate award, as well as
a supervisor of the year award and a student employer of the year award.
Every student and supervisor nominated gets recognized at the reception,
Rogers said.
This year, the undergraduate recipient of the award was Connor
Grabowski, a senior technology education major from Medina. He is a
student assistant in the fine arts department. He was nominated by Lynn
Weldon, a secretary in the fine arts department.
"It's a nice thing for the campus to have that minimum-wage helper
around," Grabowski said.
The graduate recipient of the award was Peter Greenhalgh, a graduate
student from Buffalo majoring in the multidisciplinary studies program.
Greenhalgh works as a student assistant in computing and technology
services. He was nominated by Matthew Amerosa, a desktop systems
technician in computing and technology as well as Raymond Lonsdale,
assistant manager of computer technology services purchasing and Kevin
Rabener, a desktop systems supervisor in computing and technology
services.
There were also 13 finalists who were recognized at the reception.
One of the finalists was Jenna Tomasello, a senior from Buffalo majoring in
Philosophy with a minor in Legal Studies. She works in the political science
department and was nominated by the department's secretary, Jacquelyn
Rankin. Tomasello said that it is good to see students recognized.
"I was very honored, I thoroughly enjoyed my job," Tomasello said.
"Student workers really do contribute a great deal to the college. They
really are an asset to any department that's lucky enough to have them."
Supervisors on and off campus were nominated by students for the
Supervisor of the Year Award.
"They don't have to be an on-campus supervisor," Rogers said. "It can be
somebody in the community."
This year, the Supervisor of the Year Award went to Weldon. She was
nominated by Grabowski and Tamara Campbell, another student assistant
in the fine arts department.
"I love the extra help," Weldon said. "Having work studies, and student
assistants, and even graduate students is a big help to a department."
Rogers said that this is the first time that the Supervisor of the Year and a
Student Employee of the Year nominated each other.
The Student Employer of the Year went to Transitional Services, Inc., who
has been recruiting Buffalo State students since 2006.
Rogers said that Collette Graham, the human resources manager of
Transitional Services, Inc., has recently become highly involved with the
Career Development Center.
"She spent a lot of time trying to help us educate Buffalo State students for
life after graduation," Rogers said.
