FSA engages in search for new campus modeling talent

The Fashion Students Association is preparing for their second Buffalo State's Next Top
Model competition, to be held April 4.

Aspiring models and those with a keen sense of style are urged to participate and put their
skills to the test for a chance to win the title. The competition is open to anybody who
feels they have what it takes.

This show will center on catwalks. Posing, walking, and styling are key components, and
in the end it is all about who can be named Catwalk Queen.

"It's an opportunity to give fashionistas a chance to strut their stuff," FSA president
Fatoumatou Binta Barry said.

FSA wants to showcase the talent of those who have helped in their past shows, as well
as provide a chance for the campus to see fresh new ideas. The show allows students to
demonstrate their passion and ability, and it is an opportunity for the rest of campus to
appreciate the range of talent surrounding them.

The last competition took place in Spring 2011, and Barry estimated that between 200-
300 people came to watch the show. This year's show will include more of a game show
feel, where contestants will have tasks to perform before hitting the runway.

"You have to be quick witted and really think on your feet to get these different missions
done," said Catriona Buchanan, FSA's programs coordinator.

Buchanan assured that nothing will be too extreme, and that it is not a high-tension
environment. Top Model is not about cutthroat competition; rather, it is a ground on
which to build confidence and gain experience.

According to FSA's constitution, one of their purposes is "to provide students the
opportunity to gain 'hands-on' experience in today's fashion industry," and they are
doing just that.

Drastic makeovers and designer fashions will not have a place in BSNTM, and
the participants will be accountable for their own hair, makeup and clothing. FSA
understands that aspiring models need to be skillful in styling themselves - it is necessary
for casting calls - so the judges will be looking at the styling component as well.

A couple of mini-rehearsals will precede the competition. Anyone that cannot make
it to see Top Model live will be able to get glimpses of the action through pictures and
videos on all of FSA's social media outlets, which include Twitter, Facebook and Bengal
Connect.

Barry hopes that more people will step outside of their comfort zone and make their
runway debut.

"Sometimes it's hard to get people involved," she said.

As entertaining as it is to watch, the show is an excellent opportunity for anyone to
expand their horizons and enhance the college experience.

So the question is: do you have what it takes to be Buffalo State's Next Top Model? Why
not find out?

For those interested in strutting their stuff, an informational is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Friday in Caudell 315.
