Porter Hall sexual assault falsely reported

The University Police Department has revealed that the sexual assault reported on Saturday,
Feb. 23 has been revoked.
According to an email sent out by UPD, the female Buffalo State student who reported an
alleged sexual assault in Porter Hall "has voluntarily admitted that a crime did not occur."
UPD said that they examined the evidence as well as interviewed the person of interest as part
of the investigation.
Chief of University Police, Peter Carey, explained that the facts and evidence of the case posed
questions about the reported sexual assault.
"There were other circumstances where what the victim was saying and what facts and
evidence we have were not lining up," Carey said. "With this one, it led us to question if a crime
took place, and the victim ultimately said that a crime did not take place and that the incident
was falsely reported."
A previous sexual assault was reported last semester, but the person who reported the incident
said that she did not want to continue participating in the investigation. Carey stated that the
incidents were not related to the lack of security in the dorms.
"These two incidents are not related or affected by the security in the residence halls," Carey
said. "They are locked up 24 hours a day, they have access control, we have video cameras
at the entrance and exits on the first floor, and in the lobby. What we always try to do through
orientation and other mechanisms is to encourage the students to take reasonable and practical
safety precautions."
Carey explained that the timeframe for investigations varies depending on the accessible
evidence, and the timely cooperation of people involved.
"Part of it is the types and availability of evidence," Carey said. "When you're talking about
witnesses, and video evidence that is gained and controlled by the college, we have much
quicker access to that."
Carey said he doesn't want this particular incident to affect students' willingness to report crime
on campus because each case will be thoroughly investigated.
"Our security procedures and measures in the residence halls are very good, and we need
to continue to educate our students to take personal safety precautions to try to eliminate the
possibility of them becoming victim of a crime," Carey said.
