Lacrosse team moves to 3-0

The Buffalo State women's lacrosse team is off to a perfect start to its season.
The Bengals won a pair of home games last week, defeating Roberts Wesleyan, 18-11, Thursday while
holding off St. John Fisher, 13-12, Tuesday en route to improving its record to 3-0.
Against Roberts Wesleyan, despite rainy conditions at Coyer Field, the Bengals jumped out to a 4-0 lead
in the game's first eight minutes and continued their solid play throughout the first half, which ended
with Buffalo State ahead 10-4.
The Bengals didn't come out quite as strong to start the second half. They were outscored 3-1 in the first
6:04 of the half, allowing the Raiders to pull within four. However, three Bengals goals in a 3:46 span,
including two by Karen Shaddock, put the Bengals back in control.
"People had it in their brains that we had the game in the bag and it didn't really matter because their
team wasn't as good as ours," attacker Kendyl Clarkson said of the team's slow second-half start. "When
you're thinking that way, it's easy for them to get a quick jump; they had a few draw controls and scored
a few goals from there."
Clarkson had three goals and a game-high six assists, and Shaddock led all goal scorers with five to lead
the Bengals to victory. Head coach Meg Stevens wasn't entirely pleased with the team's play.
"It wasn't our finest hour," she said. "It's not just about Kendyl (Clarkson) and Karen (Shaddock). I need
a full offense that works. I had eight people score, and that's great, but I want even more. We need to
play better as an offensive unit. I don't just need two players to step up, I need everybody to step up."
In addition to the offense supplied by Shaddock and Clarkson, Becca Martinez and Ashley Caporizzo
netted three goals apiece while Sarah Kirchberger, Jenn Shaddock, Regan McGannon and Niki Paulhardt
combined for the rest of the Bengals' scoring.
"We need to start clicking as a team," Karen Shaddock said. "In our first couple of games we haven't
played as one team. We work hard individually, but we just need to pull it together."
For the second consecutive game, freshmen goalkeepers Adi DiDuro and Colleen George both saw time
for Buffalo State. DiDuro started the game for the Bengals and allowed four first-half goals. George
started the second half but was replaced by DiDuro just 11:39 in after allowing three goals and recording
no saves.
"We have two very young goalkeepers. We're trying to get them good experience and trying to put
them in good positions," Stevens said. "We want to find out early on who is reacting well and in what
types of situations. We're really kind of playing with some coaching moves that will help us later in the
season."
Buffalo State outshot Roberts Wesleyan 34-17 and also forced 19 Raiders turnovers while recording just
nine of their own. The Bengals were also all over the ground balls, picking up 13 to Roberts Wesleyan's
five.
It was just the second game Roberts Wesleyan had played since the school adopted the women's
lacrosse program. The Raiders held a slim 15-14 advantage in draw controls and were 3-for-3 in free
position shots, compared to the Bengals' 2-for-3.
"I was really impressed with how (Roberts Wesleyan) played," Karen Shaddock said. "It was only their
second game in school history and I thought they did well."
Clarkson agreed.
"A few of their girls were really athletic. They played very well as a team," Clarkson said. "Our team just
didn't step up against them and we didn't play together."
In Tuesday's victory over St. John Fisher, the Bengals held off a late rally by the Cardinals to preserve
the win. St. John Fisher scored its last five goals in the final six minutes but was unable to complete the
comeback.
The Bengals controlled play in the first half and exited the stanza ahead, 6-2. However, the Cardinals
came out stronger in the second half, outscoring the Bengals, 10-7.
Clarkson led the Bengals'
offense for the third straight game, recording one goal and six assists. Karen Shaddock had four goals
and Caporizzo added three goals and two assists. Martinez and Mariah DeBolt both contributed two
goals.
After splitting time with DiDuro in each of the team's first two games, George played all 60 minutes in
goal, recording four saves.
Jamie Handley had a game-high six ground balls for the Bengals, but St. John Fisher held a 17-14
advantage in that category. The Cardinals also outshot Buffalo State 29-20.
The Bengals host nationally-ranked No. 7 Hamilton Thursday at 4 p.m. and will travel to Clermont, Fla.
next week for their National Training Center Spring Trip games.
