Students generous for clothing drive

Buffalo State marked National Random Acts of Kindness Week with a clothing drive, which surprised
organizers by bringing in more donations than expected.
Weigel Health Promotions ran the drive during the week of Feb. 18, but donations continued to come
in over the following week as well. All donations benefited Cornerstone Manor, a local women and
children's shelter.
"We got well over 30 bags full of clothes, and people donated even after the drive technically ended,"
said John MacInnes, a peer educator at Weigel Health Promotions.
According to Tammy Kresby, assistant director of Weigel Helath Promotions, the drive was a way for
students and faculty to get involved in something beneficial.
"They want to do the right thing, they want to do their part to make the community better, to make Buff
State better, but a lot of times they just don't know what to do," she said. "So when they're given an
opportunity to do something that is relatively simple, they're usually all about it."
MacInnes said he is also a resident assistant at Tower I and encouraged his residents to donate.
"The residents were amazing," he said. "All of us were surprised that they did so well."
One of the residents who participated in the drive, Ashley Damico, donated a pair of winter boots,
shirts and sweaters.
"I think if you are blessed enough to be able to do for yourself and have extra, you should definitely
give to other people," she said.
Wende Mix, a geography and planning professor, donated coats, mittens, hats and a scarf.
"It's a great idea and I think they should do these more often because a lot of us have closets full of
clothes that are no longer being put to use," she said.
Christie Bijouette, a graduate assistant for Weigel Health Promotions, said she was impressed with how
successful the drive was.
"I was overwhelmed with the amount of donations that actually started to take over our office," she
said. "I was just very impressed with everybody's generosity."
According to the college's president Aaron Podolefsky, that generosity is typical for the Buffalo State
community.
"The success of this clothing drive is representative of the kind and caring community we have
at Buffalo State and our college's long tradition of serving and helping those in need in our area
community," he said.
Sheirie Swain, marketing and event coordinator at Buffalo City Mission, extended her gratitude to
everyone who participated in the drive.
"I would like to just say a big thank you to everybody who donated, from everyone at the Buffalo City
Mission," she said. "It's incredibly important to have those kinds of drives happening. It's always nice
to see the community come together and do it for a greater cause."
Tabling events by Weigel Health Promotions were also part of Random Acts of Kindness Week.
"We did tabling events where people could say what their random act of kindness was. I donated blood
the first day and we had people give hugs to people," MacInnes said.
The drive originated as MacInnes' idea and he said it will be done again in the future.
