Large turnout for Step show
On Nov. 5, Step Expression held their annual Step Show in the Campbell Student Union in a filled Social Hall. The turnout was so great some people had to be turned away because the maximum number of 350 spectators allowed in had been reached.
This year's event featured two competing step teams, the University of Buffalo and Daemen College, as well as a performance by Buffalo State's Step Expression. The colleges were given the chance to choose their own theme.
"It was difficult for the other colleges to come this year due to the fact that they had to find funding and transportation to come Buffalo State College," said criminal justice major Brittany Robinson, president of Step Expression.
Daemen College's theme was living in color. Their clothes were colorful and bright, bringing out a fun, energetic and happy personality. They communicated well as they stepped, danced and acted out an original scene. One of the performers stood out from the others in his clown outfit, leaving spectators applauding loudly and shouting with excitement.
The University of Buffalo decided to do a Barbie theme. After the DJ had trouble playing their CD, their frustration showed, which caused them to appear less synchronized in comparison to Daemen.
Buff State's Step Expression did a Back-to-Africa theme, dressed in colorful orange mixed with green, along with other colors that reflected the African culture. Their performance left the spectators laughing, cheering and applauding for more.
"If you weren't there, you missed out on the best show of the year with the best step team in Buffalo," said sophomore forensic chemistry major Patrice Denman. "You also missed a really funny show with two good teams competing against each other."
Daemen College won the competition against UB for their performance of living in color. They were judged on five criteria: precision, synchronization, time, creativity and organization.
"They delivered with no problem and did a really great job with their theme," said junior theater major Cecelia Barron.
