Annual fiesta bonds students

As the end of the Spring 2012 semester quickly approaches, clubs and organizations aim to
bring the year to a positive finish. Events like the United Students Government's Springfest and
various awards ceremonies leading up to graduation are Buffalo State's sure signs that summer
is slowly approaching, and that all students and staff should begin the sunlit season on a positive
note.

For thirty years and counting, an annual International Fiesta lead by the International Student
Organization has been a great way for students to happily bring a close to the year.

The International Student Organization, lead by president Carissa Handiman and vice president
Joe Ngai, under the advisement of director Gean Gounard, has had a place on the Buffalo State
campus for more than 50 years.

Said to currently have between 40 and 50 committed members, and typically hailing from more
than 50 countries around the globe, the group is one of many examples of the college's immense
diversity. Students from locations ranging from North Korea, to Somalia, to Jamaica have the
opportunity to interact and share their traditions with one another.

Funded by the United Student Government, the International Fiesta is one of roughly five large
events that the organization holds annually.

"The Fiesta is a way to end the semester with a bang, and to get everyone both on and off
campus together," Handiman said. "People have the opportunity to mingle and make connections
by sharing their cultures."

Thao Nguyen, the public relations officer and member of ISO for the 2011-2012 year, said
the event was established to "raise diversity by way of performance and display of different
cultures."

The event will include many performing arts, including Irish dancing, African drumming and
dancing, and belly dancing. Dinner following the show will be in the form of a cocktail party
due to current construction in the Student Union, with finger foods that have strong cultural
influences of many different countries.

"Most of the performers at the event are from off campus," said Carlos Cisneros Vilchis,
treasurer of the organization for three years. "The affiliated people alone who attend add up to
about 50 to 100 people. It's fun for me, and those attending usually say they have fun."

The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The show will be held in Rockwell Hall, while
dinner will be in the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Students' cost of attendance for the event is $3 for the show, $5 for both the show and dinner.
General admission is $5 for the show, $8 for both. Anyone may attend.
