Paterson takes over as dean of education

Provost Dennis Ponton announced late last week that Wendy Paterson will be taking over as dean of
the School of Education, effective July 1.
A two-time alumnus of Buffalo State, Paterson also spent 21 years serving as a developmental and
educational technology specialist, faculty member and department chair at the college before accepting
a position with St. John Fisher three years ago.
"We're excited about having Wendy back," Ponton said. "This will be great for Buffalo State and the
students, faculty, all of us, really."
Paterson originally came to Buffalo State in 1988, on a multimillion-dollar "Strengthening Institutions"
federal Title III grant to promote student retention. In her time here, she developed early programs in
computer-assisted instruction for student support and instituted programming for faculty development
in teaching excellence. She was also honored by the State University of New York with the
Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 1996.
In addition to her professional career in education, she has written two books, the first of which,
Unbroken Homes: Single-Parent Mothers Tell Their Stories, was chosen for the Innovations in
Feminist Studies series by Haworth Press. Paterson has also written research articles and educational
analyses that have been published in scholarly journals.
"We conducted a national search and (Paterson) turned out to be the most qualified candidate for the
position," Ponton said.
As dean, Paterson will be responsible for overseeing the School of Education's six departments, 1,800
students, the literacy center and the award-winning Professional Development Schools Consortium.
"I am so pleased to be returning to Buffalo State, my alma mater and the nurturing place where I started
my professional life," she said. "It will be a joy for me to work again with the finest faculty in SUNY
to chart the course toward a positive, productive future for education."
Paterson will be replacing Paul Theobald, who has served as interim dean of the School of Education
for two years. Theobald, who could not be reached for comment, has recently accepted a similar
position at Buena Vista University in Iowa.
"Gratitude is expressed from the campus community to Paul Theobald, Buffalo State Woods-Beals
Endowed Chair in Urban and Rural Education, for serving as School of Education interim dean for
the past two years," Ponton told the Bengal News. "We wish Paul continued success in the dean's
appointment at Buena Vista."
