Students vote in new representatives

United Student Government held their annual elections from April 2 through April 5, but
the process was much different than what the organization had ever done before.
For the first time ever, the elections were held online on Bengal Connect. This is the first
time USG has utilized electronic polls, making it more accessible to students, who could
vote 24 hours a day anywhere there was computer access, said Lynn Korn, USG program
coordinator.
Many candidates ran unopposed, but a number of new representatives will take office as
well.
Among the candidates who were newly elected are Muhammed Sumbundu for College
Council, Trivet Jarmond for the undergraduate seat on Student Assembly, Justine Britten
for treasurer and Andrea Wright for assistant vice president for student life.
As elected representatives take office, previous executive board members who
are graduating, like USG Treasurer Josh Lipka, have advice for the upcoming
representatives.
"My advice is to really ensure that organizations are getting out to the campus
community and doing events on campus," Lipka said. "It is also important to make sure
that the organizations fully use their budget in an effective manner. One of the key factors
in being treasurer is to always increase transparency in the treasury."
USG Executive Vice President James Huggins will also be graduating and had some
words of wisdom for the vice president that will be appointed by USG President Sara
Garfinkle.
"The best advice is to try your best to always be as professional as possible," Huggins
said. "Try not to have any favorites and always try to be fair. Most importantly, stay on
top of the administrative vice presidents."
Garfinkle said she is looking forward to working with the new USG executive board staff
and has advice for the staff as well.
"Remember the reasons you ran for this position no matter what you do," she said. "We
are here to represent the students. That is what is going to make the tough days worth it.
"If you ever need anything at all please come to me. This summer I look forward to
meeting and working with my new executive board."
