Season-opening sensation

Karen Shaddock scored eight goals and added two assists as the Bengals defeated non-conference
opponent Elmira (1-1) in a 19-5 rout on Monday afternoon in Shaddock's hometown of Corning.
Kendyl Clarkson had a big game as well, tallying three goals and seven assists for Buffalo State (1-0)
in a game that was dominated by the Bengals from the beginning.
However, even with 20 combined points from their two leading scorers, coach Meg Stevens wasn't all
that pleased with the Bengals' performance.
"It wasn't good enough," said Stevens. "If we want to be a top-20, top-25 team, we've got to play
better. We did not play to the best of our ability."
Clarkson said she agreed with her coach's sentiment.
"We could've had better ball movement," said the senior forward. "We were a bit jumbled up, and
could've been better on transition."
Shaddock said the team's underperformance was mostly due to having a number of first-year players
on the roster.
"We have a lot of first year (girls)," she said. "There were definitely some nerves."
The Bengals got on the board first when Shaddock put a shot past Elmira goaltender LeAnne Presler to
give Buffalo State a 1-0 lead just 3:48 into the game. The floodgates would then open on the Soaring
Eagles.
Buffalo State went up 5-0 before Elmira finally got on the board on a goal by Jordan Donegan 14
minutes into the first half.
Shaddock scored six of her eight goals in the first half as the Bengals took an 11-4 lead into the break.
The second half was more of the same from Buffalo State as they scored the half's first four goals to
open up their lead to 15-4.
Elmira would score to make it 15-5, but the Bengals ended the game on a four-goal run, the last three
coming from Mariah DeBolt, to earn their first win of the 2012 season.
Buffalo State held the edge in shots, 32-13.
Goaltender Colleen George allowed four goals on seven first-half shots before getting pulled by
Stevens for the second half. Adi DiDuro played the second stanza, making two saves and allowing one
goal.
Stevens said that the change wasn't due to performance, but was instead a predetermined plan.
"Honestly, I'm going to switch them again next game," said Stevens. "I'm going to start the other
keeper (DiDuro), and switch them at halftime. I've got to get them experience. Right now, there is not a
clear starter."
Buffalo State will open the home portion of their schedule on Thursday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference
match-up against Roberts Wesleyan, and Shaddock feels they have some things to improve on before
then.
"We need to clean up the little things," she said. "(We) need better ball control."
