Intramural softball tournament connects wide array of students

It's nearing the end of the semester, which means it's almost
time for the annual Buffalo State College intramural softball
tournament.
Jordan Boser, a junior social studies major, played in the softball
tournament last year. His team didn't place first, but he plans to
come back to win this time around.
"I'm guaranteeing we get redemption this year and win it all,"
Boser said. "I had a blast and it was a great way to spend a
weekend."
The tournament will take place on April 28 at the open field near
the H.H. Richardson Complex on Buffalo State's campus. In
the event of bad weather, the event will be moved inside to the
Houston Gym and will be played as Nerf baseball.
The signups and applications for this event must be turned in by
April 18 and can be found by going to Buffalo State's athletic
website, under the Buffalo State Recreation and Intramurals tab.
Students can bring those applications printed out to either the
fitness center or to Ozolins office in the Athletic Office, both
located in the Houston Gym.
Courtney Kiff, a junior fashion merchandising major, is looking
forward to the event this year.
"I'm really excited for the softball tournament, and I already have
an idea of who will be on my team," Kiff said. "Its cool that people
who may not ever get a chance to be involved in a sport on campus
can now be involved in one for free."
The games will played in single-elimination format, meaning
once a team loses they are out of the tournament. If an extra day is
needed, the tournament will carry over to the following Sunday.
Its start time will be decided based on how many teams sign
up, but will not start before 10 a.m. on Saturday, according to
Christian Ozolins, manager of the Recreation and Intramurals
Program.
Usually about 10 to 15 teams sign up for softball, with up to 15
players on each team, Ozolins said. Ten players can play on the
field at a time.
"It's been a lot of fun", Ozolins said. "It's one of the few events
that our female population turnout is great compared to the other
intramural sports."
The reason this event is so huge and brings the biggest turnout
is because of its collaboration with the Minority and Commuter
Student Services, according to Ozolins. They send out emails to all
registered commuter students informing them of the free event and
how to get involved.
The commuter students can then sign up by themselves and be
placed on a team or they can sign up as a team.
Tamara McMillan, the associate director of leadership, said it's
a great opportunity for the commuter students to be involved on
campus. Those students can go to McMillan's office in Campbell
Student Union room 400 and let her know if they would like to
participate in the event.
"It better connects our commuters, not only to other commuter
students but to the campus," McMillan said. "It's fun, inviting, and
gives them a better way to then connect with our office."
Another reason the event is so popular is because of the food
provided throughout the tournament, which is sponsored by
Student Life, McMillan said.
The cookout and picnic will be provided for free throughout the
day to all attendees, whether playing in the event or just coming
out to support and watch.
All equipment, such as bats, gloves and balls, will also be
provided to all players. There is no required uniform, but cleats are
recommended, Ozolins said.
Umpires are also hired for this event, which gives the game a more
official feel, Ozolins said.
"We look forward to a great event," he said.
