Shaddock has record setting game in 17-11 win

A single-digit goal total wasn't enough to satisfy Buffalo State lacrosse attacker Karen Shaddock Tuesday
afternoon.

Shaddock scored ten goals, a new single-game record for Buffalo State, to lead the Bengals past
Geneseo, 17-11, in a SUNYAC contest at Coyer Field, snapping a two-game in-conference losing streak.

"I had no idea I was getting that close to the record. Kendyl (Clarkson) told me when I was one goal
away," Shaddock said. "I was just focused on winning the game. It was pretty cool."

Clarkson was very happy for her teammate's big day.

"It was great. It would be nice if she left (Buffalo State) holding most records," said Clarkson, who had
seven assists of her own. "It was just fun. Fun to see, fun to play with, fun to pass to."

The previous mark for goals in a game was nine, set by Katie Henderson in 2009. In addition to breaking
that mark, Shaddock tied the program's single-game record for points with 12, becoming the first player
in program history to reach 400 career points. She entered the game with 394.

"It was tremendous," coach Meg Stevens said. "She's been a great player for us and it's great to see her
break another record, but it was definitely supplied by a full-team offense. She's able to do what she
does because she has an offense that helps her do it."

The Bengals (6-5, 2-3 SUNYAC) jumped out to an early lead to kick off a conference matchup in which
they would never trail. Mariah DeBolt and Niki Paulhardt each had two goals in support of the Bengals'
offense. Becca Martinez contributed a goal and an assist while Ashley Caporizzo and Jenn Shaddock
filled out the score sheet for Buffalo State.

Halfway through the first half, after the Bengals committed numerous fouls and turnovers while leading
5-2, Bengals goalkeeper Colleen George made several key saves - including two from the free position
- to thwart the Geneseo attack and preserve her team's lead. George finished with 13 saves.

"She stepped up and played very, very well," Stevens said of George. "She's getting better and better for
us every time she steps on the field. That was big."

Karen Shaddock agreed with her coach.

"(George) had an awesome game," Shaddock said. "She made so many big saves that gave us the ball

back and momentum back."

Buffalo State carried a 9-6 lead into the second half and Geneseo would only get within three goals
before the Bengals went on a 6-0 run to take command. The team controlled the clock and held on from
that point forward.

"Goal differential matters in SUNYAC play, so I wanted to make sure we built ourselves a good enough
lead," Stevens said. "I don't want to run up the score but I want to make sure our offense is working and
make sure we have a goal differential that helps us when it's time for playoffs."

The Bengals outshot Geneseo, 35-28, while forcing 23 turnovers to offset an 18-12 disadvantage in draw
controls.

The team's defensive achievements in the game earned praise from Stevens.

"This is definitely some of the best defense we've played," Stevens said. "We're getting there. We're
kind of finding our stride and finding it at the right time."

A loss would have put the Bengals in a difficult spot as they would've fallen to a 1-4 in-conference
record. Earning a SUNYAC playoff berth at that point would have been highly unlikely.

"The win was huge," Clarkson said. "Not only mentally, but for our hopes of making the playoffs.

"If we had dropped another game, the chances of us getting in the playoffs were slim," she
added. "Mentally, we needed this win together as a team, with everyone playing hard. That hasn't been
there in a long time."

Clarkson also noted that, despite the victory, there is always room for improvement.

"We'll have to take it game-by-game," she said. "Defensively, if we need to step up, we're going to step
up on different girls next time. Transition can always get better. Offensively, we need more people to
step up and score.

"Today, things fell into place for us but we're going to keep working hard."

The Bengals host Potsdam in another SUNYAC contest Saturday at 1 p.m.
