Caribbean talk Friday

On October 5, 2011

Recently, Phi Alpha Theta, Buffalo State College's History Honors Society, held its first presentation of the Caribbean Lecture Series.

The Caribbean Lecture Series, which was devised by Dr. Bridget Chesterton of the History Department, set outs to discuss historical and social issues that have impacted the various Caribbean islands.  Our first lecturer was Dr. Gillian McGillivray of York University, whose presentation, entitled "Blazing Cane: Sugar Communities and the Rise-Fall of Populism in Cuba 1898-1959," discussed the complex sugar economy of Cuba and how it shaped the nation's society and politics.

The thorough presentation by Dr. McGillivray was followed by a lively question and answer session, which involved questions from both students and faculty members.  All the members of Phi Alpha Theta want to invite everyone to our next presentation of the Caribbean Lecture Series, which is set to take place Friday, Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. in Bulger West

All are welcome to enjoy Dr. Anne MacPherson's lecture entitled "Needle Workers and Tobacco Strippers: Puerto Rican Women Strike Back During the Great Depression."
