Don't kiss and tell the Internet
By Colleen Young

I'm a big fan of the saying, "Don't kiss and tell."
There are plenty of exceptions to that rule, such as a fun conversation about love with your best
friends during a girls' night, but I don't think it's very polite to publicize intimate relationship
details for the world to see.
I fully support happy couples letting the world know that they're in love, but when it comes
to aspects of their relationship that occur behind closed doors, I'd prefer them to keep that
information to themselves.
Recently, I was waiting in line to pay at Wegmans and I read "Waiting for our Wedding Night"
on the cover of People Magazine, accompanied by a picture of the latest stars of The Bachelor,
Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici. The couple recently got engaged on the show and is now
letting the world know that they're staying abstinent until their wedding night.
I am by no means an avid fan of The Bachelor, so I'll never be able to explain the true dynamic
between Lowe and Guidici, but I do know that in general, I'd like couples to keep some delicate
information to themselves, no matter who they are.
I'm fully supportive of the famous couple's life decision, and I'm impressed by their strength to
stick to their conservative views in an ever-changing world. I'm glad they're being patient and
waiting, but I wish they would've kept that private decision to themselves.
I know the world has already watched their whirlwind relationship blossom publicly on
television, but I think that even a heavily-watched couple can keep some information to
themselves.
Some may say that the attention People Magazine will bring to the topic of abstinence will show
the world that there still are couples out there who wait until marriage. However, I think People's
headline and cover photo will show the world that it's abnormal for a couple to wait.
I think the fact that a couple staying pure until marriage makes the front cover of a popular
magazine is sad. It shows that it's news to our society that a couple would wait for their wedding
night these days. This recent Bachelor news is proof that our society is desensitized to seeing a
headline about intimate relations, but surprised to see a story about a traditional couple.
Don't get me wrong, I love talking to my best friends about guys. We get very excited for each
other when we hear about each other's crushes, love interests, boyfriends, dates, hugs, hand
holding and kisses.
We're happy for each other and we love to live through each other's love stories. But we're
classy and respectful enough to keep the rest of the details about our relationships to ourselves,
and I wish that the rest of society would do the same.
Quite frankly, any further details wouldn't interest me at all. I'm happy for my friends when they
find someone they like and someone they can be close to. I love hearing that their relationships
are doing well - it gives me hope.
I love when couples are happy together, and I'm glad they're so full of joy that they want the
world to know about their love, but I just wish they would keep anything that isn't G rated to
themselves.
I'm not naïve, immature or sheltered. I know that couples don't sing to each other, fall in love
and dance when they get married like they do in the Disney movies, but I do know that couples
still need to show some class, have respect for others and be careful not to publish intimate
details about their about their relationships for the world to see.
If you're in a relationship, congratulations. I'm truly happy for you and I'd love to hear about
your bliss. It's not that I never want to hear about happy couples again, it's just that there needs
to be a boundary that couples never cross when it comes to providing information about their
relationship.
Show the world you're happy with each other and that you have wonderful plans for the future,
just do it in a discrete and modest way.
