Exhibit features community

Mary Beth Bartlett said she is proud to be submitting a piece of her designer jewelry
as part of the Artists Among Us II exhibit at the Burchfield Penney this year.
Bartlett, an alumni of Buffalo State College, designs jewelry, mostly necklaces, which
are sold in the Burchfield Penney gift shop.
"I love that Burchfield supports local artists," she said. "Not many places or people
do. For any artists or designers it's an honor to get something you created on display
in an art gallery."
The Artists Among Us II is an exhibit that is all about the community. Members of
the Burchfield Penney in good standing have an opportunity to have their work
shown in public. Each member can submit no more than one work to the gallery.
Mary Helen Miskuly, registrar at the Burchfield Penney, said this is a chance for the
community to show their artistic talents to the public.
"This is a great opportunity for members to exhibit their work, because it gives even
the artists who are not typically shown at other venues a chance to get their feetwet," Miskuly said.
The First Artists Among Us exhibit was shown in Rockwell Hall, which used to house
the Burchfield Penney before it moved to its new location. It was the last exhibit to
be shown in the original gallery.
Kathleen Heyworth, head of marketing and public relations official at the Burchfield
Penney, recalled the first Artists Among Us.
"This is the second time we have done one of these exhibitions in our history, and
the timing seemed right to celebrate the artists who are working in our community
at this time," she said.
Kathy Shiroki, an art education lecturer at Buffalo State College, said she is
very excited about this upcoming exhibit, adding that many of her students are
participating in it.
One of her students, Tracy Goblin, will be hosting a drop-in workshop, titled
Message in a Bottle, in the gallery's studio on opening night.
"She created this website were you can leave a message in a bottle, sending off good
wishes," Shiroki said. "She has been doing this with school children, particularly
third graders all over Buffalo."
The opening celebration will be held on May 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the
Burchfield Penney.
Artists and Burchfield Penney members interested in getting their work
shown in the exhibit can find the forms to fill out on their website at http://
www.burchfieldpenney.org/, or pick them up at the information desk.
The Artists Among Us II will be on view from May 11 to August 26.
