Bengals lose pair, bounce back with big win

After starting the season 4-0, the Buffalo State lacrosse team has lost five of its last seven
games, including home losses against Brockport on Thursday, 14-7, and Oneonta on
Saturday, 13-10.
Coach Meg Stevens said her young team is still searching for its identity.
"It takes time," Stevens said. "People have to find new roles and adapt, and I think we're
still in the process of having to do that. At this point, (we're asking), who's going to step
up? In the past, we've had players that were willing to do the work to get it done and
figure out a way to win. Right now, we haven't figure that out yet.
"We keep trying to get players to figure that out, but they keep waiting for it to be
somebody else. At some point, they are going to have to look in the mirror."
The Bengals had plenty of time to reflect on their roles before the Brockport game, which
was rescheduled when snowy conditions twice forced the postponement of the original
matchup on Tuesday. When the game was finally played Thursday, a flat start doomed
Buffalo State.
Brockport took a 3-0 lead 10 minutes in and extended its lead to 4-0 with 6:20 left in
the half. The Bengals didn't get on the scoreboard until senior attack Sarah Kirchberger
scored unassisted with 4:47 left.
The Golden Eagles answered 20 seconds later. Sophomore midfield Meghan Farrell
scored the Bengals' second and final goal of the half before Brockport scored again with
18 seconds left.
Junior attack Becca Martinez and senior attack Ashley Caporizzo both had two goals in
the second half. Farrell added another, but Brockport scored eight times to add to their
first-half total and keep the Bengals from coming back from their poor start.
"We were all so hyped and excited before the game - in our locker room, in warmups
- but once we stepped on the field we came out really flat, which is not typical for us,"
Martinez said.
Kirchberger said the Bengals might have got off to a flat start because the game was
postponed twice.
"We were supposed to play Tuesday, everybody was pumped and ready to go, and it was
kind of a buzz kill that it got cancelled," Kirchberger said. "Then Wednesday, we got all
pumped and again, it was another buzz kill that we had to wait until Thursday. I think our
mindset wasn't as focused as it would have been if the game was on Tuesday."
Stevens attributed the loss to her team's poor performance rather than the postponement
or the strong play of Brockport (7-2, 2-0 SUNYAC).
"It really had very little to do with (Brockport) and more to do with us," Stevens said.
"It didn't look like we came to win. Going down early is very hard on us, mentally and
physically. It's just harder to come back in a game like that after going down 4-0 so
early."
In the loss, Buffalo State was outshot 29-17. Martinez said the Bengals took fewer shots
because they were moving the ball around more and looking for the right shot, but she
had no excuse for why the Bengals could only find the net twice in the first half.
"There's no explanation for that," Martinez said. "We just weren't connecting how we
should have been. We weren't putting together plays or sets for us to take the shots we
wanted."
A new warmup routine seemed to cure the slow-starting Bengals (6-5, 1-2 SUNYAC) in
the first half against Oneonta. Buffalo State held an 8-6 lead at halftime.
"We tried a silent warm-up to come out more intimidating," Kirchberger said. "I guess
it worked for the first half. Then we got flat in the second half, let them go on a run and
they just didn't stop."
Oneonta (6-5, 1-2 SUNYAC) took control in the second half and held Buffalo State to
two goals in 30 minutes of play for the second time in as many games.
"We finally started putting stuff together," Stevens said. "We came out strong. Our
offense was good, our defense was good, things were kind of rolling. We were following
our game plan. Then things kind of spiraled downward."
The game went back-and-forth in the first half. The largest lead for either team came with
three minutes left in the first, when Martinez scored one of her five total goals to make it
8-4.
Oneonta then scored two goals at the end of the first half and three more at the beginning
of the second half to take the lead. After Martinez scored with 17:40 left to tie it at nine,
the Red Dragons outscored the Bengals 4-1 to hand Buffalo State its second loss in
conference play this season.
"It was just an incomplete game all over the field," Stevens said. "We just stopped doing
the basics."
The Bengals will take on Cortland at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Coyer Field.
