Ladies cancel Niagara Falls' comeback plans to secure 3-2 win

The Buffalo State women's hockey team opened its season on a high note Monday night, holding on to
defeat Niagara Falls Rapids Midget AA 3-2 in an exhibition game at the Ice Arena.

The Bengals jumped out to a 3-0 lead over two periods on goals by freshman defender Kendra Peters
and sophomore transfer Kara Goodwin.

Peters opened the scoring halfway through the first period by jamming a rebound past Niagara Falls
goalie Rachel Moss. With just under two minutes to go, Goodwin added to the lead on a goal assisted
by Courtney Carnes. She scored her second goal early in the second frame with a nifty top-corner shot
past Moss's glove to give the Bengals a three-goal cushion.

That lead held until the third period, when Rapids' captain Maria Gearing got a lucky break. Freshman
goalie Sarah Quigley, in goal for the second half of the game, stopped the initial shot and thought she
had smothered it, but the puck managed to trickle through her pads for the goal.

Niagara Falls struck again with 45 seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity with Peters and Jen
Seguin in the penalty box. However, the Bengals were able to shut the door and wind down the clock,
stifling all Rapids' opportunities.

Bengals head coach Robert Burke was pleased with the outcome, but knows there's some work to be
done.

"We knew Niagara Falls would be in shape, because they'd been playing and practicing for a while
now. We knew they would give us a good battle," he said. "In the first period, I think we were the
better team, but they made some adjustments and we didn't respond very well to that. We can be a little
bit more aggressive."

The Bengals had to make late adjustments. The offense came into the game short a player - Alison
Mish was a late scratch - so the rest of the forwards had to compensate, which was unexpected.

"We weren't prepared for the scratch," Goodwin said. "We were expecting to have a full roster and
then you're being told you'll be out every other shift. It adds a little bit of pressure."

Evidenced by her pair of goals and first-star selection, Goodwin handled that pressure well.

"Once you start scoring, you just want to be out there," she said.

Junior goaltender Jordan Lee started the game and stopped all 17 shots she faced. Quigley held up well
in net for the final 30 minutes, turning aside eight of 10 shots.

"I was pretty nervous at first, but once I made that first save, everything clicked," Quigley said.

Buffalo State outshot Niagara Falls 33-27 and went 0-for-4 on the power play in the win.

The Bengals officially begin their season against first-year program Stevenson University at 4 p.m.
Friday at the Ice Arena as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend 2012. Both Goodwin and Quigley
see the game as a good matchup.

"I know it's going to get a lot tougher from here," Goodwin said. "Stevenson's a new program, but I
think we should be able to beat them."
