Eight different players find net in pair of weekend victories

The Buffalo State women's hockey team rebounded from back-to-back losses to Neumann last
weekend with two wins against Chatham University (1-5/0-4 ECAC) this past weekend.
With nine different players finding the back of the net in the victories, the Bengals experienced
an offensive resurgence in a 4-1 victory Saturday and a 5-0 win on Sunday.
The Bengals (3-3/2-2 ECAC) faced a 1-0 deficit in Saturday's game but managed to rally with
four unanswered goals. Chatham's Morgan Becer opened the scoring in the first period but
Buffalo State forward Melissa Ash tied it just 50 seconds later.
It was all Buffalo State from that point on.
Courtney Carnes scored her third of the year for the eventual game-winner. Tara Boliard and
Jeyna Minnick added insurance goals in the middle frame. Jordan Lee stopped 16 shots to
preserve the win.
Despite the Bengals' balanced offensive attack, head coach Robert Burke saw room for
improvement between games.
"I wasn't satisfied with our number of shots on Saturday (29)," he said. "Our goal is 15 per
period, for a total of 45. We also wanted to - and knew we could - limit their shots on net to 15
in the game, which is what we did on Sunday."
Buffalo State finished with 49 shots in the second game. Lee turned away all 11 shots that she
faced to earn her sixth career shutout.
Kara Goodwin and Rio Flynn scored in the first period, Courtney Carnes in the second, and
Kendra Peters and Christina Zandri in the final 20 minutes to propel the Bengals to victory.
Eight different players scored goals over the weekend for the Bengals.
"We know we can't rely on one line to carry the load. Our focus is on getting all three lines to
chip in," Burke said.
The Bengals' power play has improved to 27.5 percent, good for 10th in the nation. Additionally,
they're leading the country in power-play goals with 11.
Six Buffalo State players are near the top of the conference in power-play points, but Burke said
that it was nice to see the team face success at even strength Sunday. The Bengals scored four of
their five goals playing at five-on-five.
"We took an assertive approach to our power play and it's paid off, but we were struggling on
even strength until today," Burke said. "It isn't a bad problem to have the power play be your
bread and butter, but we were glad to score so many even-strength goals."
The line of Goodwin, Carnes and Ash experienced success in particular this weekend. The trio
netted three goals in the games and each player finished the weekend with three points.
Goodwin said she believes the line is starting to come together.
"Obviously when you practice five days a week with the same people, you're going to improve
and start to develop chemistry," she said. "As long as the lines stay the same, we're only going to
get stronger and hopefully go from (scoring) one goal to two, and so on."
Carnes' success over the weekend led to her being named ECAC Player of the Week. She is
second on the team in scoring with seven points in six games.
The Bengals had to make emergency adjustments to the roster after captain Lauren Mallo was
injured in Saturday's game. She sat out on Sunday.
"Without Mallo in the lineup, the defense fared better than we expected," Burke said.
Flynn, the Bengals' alternate captain, said losing Mallo was tough.
"It wasn't the easiest thing to deal with, since she's such a big presence on the ice," Flynn
said. "But everyone kind of took it upon themselves to up their game, which was a big help."
The ladies will play Chatham again on Saturday, this time at home as a non-conference matchup.
Goodwin is confident that Buffalo State will be even more prolific offensively come Saturday.
"I feel since they have a week to prepare for next week's game, they might bring more to the
table, but we'll have fresh legs and another week of practice under our belts," she said. "So I'm
thinking there will be many more goals scored."
