Alternative Spring Break assists West Side

Buffalo State College is offering a helping hand to the community for this year's third
annual Alternative Spring Break.
The Volunteer and Service Learning Center is sponsoring programs beginning Friday
and lasting until Tuesday. The programs will take place at the First United Methodist
Church on Baynes Street, the Ontario Street United Methodist Church and West Side
Ministries.
The Alternative Spring Break is an opportunity for students to meet new people, develop
connections on the West Side and also build important life skills, said Susannah White,
senior associate at the Volunteer and Service Learning Center.
About 25 to 30 Buffalo State students are participating this year, said Aurora Schul,
educational coordinator at the Volunteer and Service Learning Center.
The first program takes place on Friday, at the First United Methodist Church during
their weekly game night. The student volunteers will be creating a St. Patrick's Day
scavenger hunt with holiday themed snacks, Schul said.
On Saturday, the student volunteers will be painting and cleaning at the Ontario Street
United Methodist Church, Schul said. The volunteers will also be helping children learn
how to build bookshelves during their after-school program at the church.
Sunday's activities include a community pancake and French toast breakfast at the First
United Methodist Church. The breakfast is for the church's Sunday school students and
is also open to the public, Schul said.
On Monday and Tuesday, student volunteers will be participating in housing
reconstruction and home ownership education for those at West Side Ministries, Schul
said.
Most of the educational and environmental programs are geared toward helping those
living at or below the poverty level, including refugees, White said.
All of this year's programs are paid for by the students themselves, Schul said. Last
month, the students put together a Valentine's Day flower sale to fundraise and the rest
comes from their own pockets.
The majority of the funds go to providing food for the student volunteers, White said.
Also, a $100 donation will be given to the First United Methodist Church.
Bianca Cornelius, a junior dietetics major, is this year's co-chair of the Alternative Spring
Break and trip site leader for the Buffalo programs.
Cornelius said this will be her second year participating in the Alternative Spring
Break. She is looking forward to getting involved within the community and building life
experience.
"Community service is essential for every student to experience," she said. "You
contribute positively to the community you live in and communities in need. Alternative
Spring Break does not only help the community, but builds a smaller community within
itself. You get to live and work with people you may not have known beforehand that all
share a passion to help others and you build strong friendships."
