Bengals blowout non-league pair in perfect start to season

The Buffalo State lacrosse team is off to a blistering start this season after winning its first two
games by a combined 23 goals.

On Friday, shortly after conceding the game's first goal five minutes in, the team shook off
the rust and first-game jitters. They proceeded to score the next 13 goals in a 15-3 victory at
Washington and Jefferson (PA) Friday afternoon in their season opener.

Brittany Fradkin scored for the Presidents just over five minutes after the opening horn.

Four minutes later, Jenn Shaddock and Renee Glass both set a screen for Meghan Farrell, who
equalized for Buffalo State (1-0). After another four minutes, senior attack Ashley Caporizzo
drove to the top of the crease and shot top-left corner to put the Bengals in front.

After a goal from Shaddock - the first of four for the junior midfielder - Caporizzo scored her
second goal of the game on a free position shot midway through the first half. Glass, a senior,
scored three goals in the final three minutes to give the Bengals a 7-1 lead at halftime.

"The first half, we started a little slow," said junior attack Becca Martinez. "You have to
remember, we lost a lot of seniors. We had many underclassmen playing, so we had to kind
of get the first-game jitters out. Once the second half started, we set in all of our plays and we
looked good."

Officially back on track, the Bengals' lead ballooned to seven less than a minute into the second
half, when Farrell scored unassisted for her second goal of the game. The sophomore midfielder
also added two assists.

"We're doing a lot of new defenses that our team is doing really well with," Farrell said. "We
have more threats on the team this year compared to last year. We had seven different people
score and, I think, six different people with assists."

Shaddock and Glass led the way, finishing with four goals apiece. Farrell and Caporizzo each
had a pair of goals and two assists, while Martinez and senior attack Sara Kirchberger each
scored a goal and had an assist. Sophomore attack Emily Dillon also scored for the Bengals.

"(Our mentality) was to just go out there and play," Caporizzo said. "We lost a lot of girls from
last year, so it was really hard to (predict) how it was going to go because we're a very young
team. I guess our mentality going into it was that it was just sort of a practice run."

Despite losing key players from last season's NCAA tournament team, the Bengals have
high expectations for this year. A win in the season opener is a step toward reaching those
expectations.

"It feels great," Caporizzo said. "Against a team like that, I didn't expect to lose, but coming off
a win is always better than coming off a loss."

While the opposing team may not have struck fear into the heart of any Buffalo State players, the
weather made things more difficult on the field than the Bengals would have liked.

"It was pretty brutal," Farrell said. "It was snowing, and really cold. Hopefully the weather gets
better."

According to Martinez, cold weather has forced most practices inside this season, and the team
hasn't had many chances to play together on an outdoor field prior to Friday's game.

"Our game plan was to stay positive and play our style of game," Martinez said. "It was just the
second time we got out on the field. We've been stuck in the gym all the time. ... It was cold
(Friday), but we came out pretty warm."

It was much of the same for Buffalo State in its home opener Tuesday against Elmira.

They struggled out of the gates again, trailing the Soaring Eagles 4-3 midway through the first
half. The Bengals, however, were able to go on an impressive run for a second straight game,
scoring 13 unanswered goals.

They used the run to propel them to their second consecutive victory, topping Elmira 16-5.
Caporizzo scored five goals and five assists, giving her seven goals and seven assists so far this
season.

Becca Martinez also contributed in a big way for the Bengals, scoring four goals and registering
two assists. Buffalo State outshot the Soaring Eagles 29-11.

The Bengals hadn't beaten anyone by more than 12 goals since last year's season opener, a 19-
5 win over Elmira. Washington and Jefferson's three goals were the fewest allowed by Buffalo
State since an 18-2 victory against Brockport on April 26, 2011.

"Our mentality was just to play our game, play Buff State ball, do everything we normally do,
don't get down," Kirchberger said. "It was the first game, and we were going to have those
nerves, those butterflies. We had to come in strong and set a tone for the game, so that's what we
did."
