Revamped Bengals back for more

There's no forgetting how the Bengals' season ended last year - a heartbreaking triple-overtime
loss in the SUNYAC semifinals.

After finishing the regular season with a 12-11 record, the Bengals hung tight with second-
seeded Plattsburgh for the entire game. The Bengals had rallied, scoring a pair of goals toward
the end of the third period, sending the game to overtime.

It took almost three full overtime periods before someone could score, but it was Plattsburgh that
finally did. The Bengals were outshot 71-41 that night and left the ice in disappointment.

"Most of our guys still have that sour taste in their mouth," head coach Nick Carriere said.

"We have to realize that Plattsburgh is a team that won the SUNYAC Championship. You learn
from it and hope to apply those lessons to this year."

Despite the loss, the 13 wins set a new school record for Buffalo State. It was also the first time
the school reached the SUNYAC semis.

"We won a playoff game," said Carriere. "We made it to the semifinal round. Now we need to
win a championship."

Perhaps one of the biggest games on the schedule is in mid-November when the Bengals will get
their shot at revenge against Plattsburgh.

"I would be lying if I said there were no games circled on our calendars," junior forward Mac
Balson said. "Obviously everyone knows we cannot wait for another shot against Plattsburgh
but at the same time we can't get too far a head of ourselves. We're going to take each game at a
time and once we get our chance we will be ready."

The Bengals will open their regular season Oct. 19 when they host Division I Penn State
University. The Nittany Lions will begin their inaugural season this Friday, and make their first-
ever road trip when they come to Buffalo State.

Buffalo State will also make a trip to the Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State on Nov. 3 for another
matchup against the Nittany Lions.

The Bengals start their season by playing four home games against Penn State, Brockport,
Geneseo and Morrisville State. Following that will be a grueling 11-game road trip.

After losing captain James Durham and forward Justin Knee, the Bengals named junior forward
Mike Zannella captain. Senior forward Trevor McKinney and junior goaltender Kevin Carr were
named assistant captains.

Although the Bengals lost two key players, there are seven new players on the team this season.

"The freshmen we added fit right into our team, and I am really looking forward to seeing what
we can do this year," Balson said.

Due to the number of incoming freshmen, Carriere may have a difficult time deciding what
players to insert into the lineup.

"There is much more competition this year," Carriere said. "Guys are fighting for those last
couple of spots on a daily basis."

"We are loaded with upper-classmen this year who have been really close to our goal and now
know what it takes to get to where we want to go," Balson said.
