BSC provides students with relaxation

There are lots of ways to deal with stress, and Buffalo State College provides a great
support system.
Suzanne Johnson, the senior counselor at the Weigel Counseling Center, says taking care of
overall health will help students with their stresses.
"Eating well, getting enough sleep, not drinking a lot of alcohol and caffeine, and getting
exercise are all going to help you function better," Johnson said.
Tammy Kresge, the assistant director of health promotion for Weigel Health Center,
recommends fitness to help stay focused and stress-free during the last few weeks.
"Try to keep active as exercise keeps the adrenaline going and helps with focus," Kresge
said.
Maximo Acosta, an undeclared freshman at Buffalo State College, has his stress
management regimen down pat.
"I handle stress by going to the gym," Acosta said. "Works every time."
Going to the gym to burn off some steam doesn't work for everyone though. James Hall, a
junior elementary education major, turns to his faith to help cope with stress.
"I am a spiritual person so I find comfort and peace when I pray and meditate on the word
of God," Hall said. "It clears my mind and centers me."
Stress is one of the biggest issues that students face at Buffalo State College as the end
of the semester nears. Buffalo State has an extensive staff of health professionals and
counselors available to talk to about dealing with stress.
The counseling center on the second floor of Weigel is open Monday through Wednesday,
8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Psychologists and counselors are there every day to help students cope with whatever they
may be dealing with.
Everyone deals with stress in different ways and finding out what works best is key. If
running isn't for you, or if you're not a very religious person, foods can help with the
calming and stress-free moods.
"Anytime you eat something like simple carbs or high fat such as pasta it fills you up briefly
but then causes you to crash later on," Kresge said. "When students want to relieve stress, I
recommend to eat healthy foods high in fiber and protein which will help them with energy
and focus."
Talking about what may be causing the stress and worry can also help alleviate it.
Vocalizing what your problem is can help to find a solution to that problem.
Kelsey Badaszewski, a sophomore hospitality major, deals with stress in that exact way.
"I like to talk it out with friends," Badaszewski said.
Each semester, Buffalo State College provides a free event known as Relaxation Night, or
Relaxation Day, as it's referred to this year due to construction in the Campbell Student
Union. Its sole purpose is to help get students' minds off their schoolwork and other
stressors, giving them a couple hours of fun and relaxation.
It will take place in the quad between the Campbell Student Union and Butler Library from
11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. May 3, rain or shine.
Two large tents will be set up with food provided by Chiavettas Barbeque and sponsored
activities by United Student Government, Health Promotions, Residence Life Hall
Association, and Weigel Health Center.
Some activities that will be included in this completely free event include massages,
manicures, art therapy, stress ball making, Kan Jam and hopscotch. A stress station will also
be set up where students can learn healthy ways to deal with their stress.
Those looking for a massage will have to line up early, as only ten massage tables will be set
up and these are usually the most popular part of the event.
Kresge said she feels it's a great way for students to relax and get their mind off
schoolwork.
"It gives students the opportunities to relax in a safe way and have fun," Kresge said. "I just
think it's really important to take a break, and when you find yourself relaxing it'll be easier
to focus when it comes down to studying."
