Ladies win three, lose in tournament finals

The Buffalo State women's volleyball team concluded a near perfect weekend with a four-set loss to
Westminster (Penn.) in the title match of the Fredonia Tournament Saturday.

The Bengals (18-5, 3-0 SUNYAC) preceded the loss with three wins, defeating Nazareth in four sets and
Case Western in five on Friday and handling Pitt-Bradford in five in the early match Saturday.

Head coach Maria DePeters said she was pleased with the Bengals' results in Friday's matches, defeating
two of the tougher teams in the region.

"Friday our play was just absolutely unbelievable," DePeters said. "(Nazareth) is a really strong team in
our region, and it's just always a hard game, and the girls just played absolutely unbelievable. And then,
we went into our game against Case Western. It was by far the best game we've played all season, and I
think probably one of the best games I've ever been a part of in my four years of coaching here."

The Bengals dropped the first set to Nazareth in the early match Friday, 20-25, before winning the final
three, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23. Sophomore Sam Parente led the team with 13 kills, while junior Sarah
Horvath chipped in 11 kills and 12 digs. Junior Kelsey Bashore finished with 38 assists.

The late match against Case Western went the distance with the Bengals taking the first two sets, 25-17,
27-25, and dropping the next two, 20-25 and 14-25, before winning the decisive set, 15-12.

Freshman Hannah Renaldo had 17 kills, while Horvath and senior Sherrell McLean contributed 14 kills
apiece. Bashore, who was named to the All-Tournament team and Buffalo State Athlete of the Week,
dished out 56 assists.

Parente noted how deep the team dug to earn the win.

"We played unbelievable against Case Western," Parente said. "Everything was put together - our
hitters were on and putting the balls away, our passers were taking all of their hard hits and picking up
balls that normally we wouldn't necessarily. I think we just went in there with the right attitude."

DePeters was also satisfied with the team's quality of play against upper-competition, because it bodes
well for future SUNYAC matches.

"They're just such great teams, so they're huge wins, and it just really shows the girls what they can do
when they put 120 percent into their play," she said. "So, I think the tougher a schedule is, the better
(chance) you have of winning in your conference."

The Bengals needed five sets to defeat Pitt-Bradford and advance to the championship match, prevailing
25-15, 16-25, 25-14, 23-25 and 15-8. Parente led the charge with 13 kills, with Bashore providing 40
assists and 17 digs. Junior Chelsea Moore had 29 digs.

After they were unable to close out the match in the fourth set, the Bengals would not be denied a
chance to play in the tournament championship.

"Their attitude was just very aggressive," DePeters said. "I think they were very disappointed in their
performance in that (fourth) set, and they knew that they had to put everything into that fifth set,
otherwise they weren't going to make it to the championship match. So they were just very determined
to get in there and beat them."

The championship match saw the Bengals take the first set from Westminster, 25-10. They failed to
keep the momentum though, dropping the next three, 12-25, 25-27 and 12-25. Renaldo led the team
with nine kills, with Bashore contributing 25 assists and 24 digs.

DePeters said she felt the Bengals just lost the psychological battle to Westminster and that there was
nothing they could have done better physically to alter the outcome.

"We just were not mentally there," DePeters said. "The first set, Westminster wasn't there, and then
the last three we just did not play Buffalo State volleyball. It was literally all mental errors that we were
making."

The Bengals will use these games as a learning curve, applying this weekend's experiences, good and
bad, to future matches.

"We have a lot to learn from this weekend," Horvath said. "It was great that we won the three games.
Going against Case was a good win for us, and (beating Nazareth), because that's good for regional
rankings.

"But, there are things we did right, and things we didn't. There were times when we let teams come
back in the game when we should have finished it. That last match against Westminster, we know we
could have won it, but we just didn't bring the same intensity all four games that we should have."

The Bengals will host two matches Saturday at the Sports Arena. They will take on Daemen at 10 a.m.
before playing St. John Fisher at 2 p.m.
