Friday Night Live holds one last hurrah for semester's end

Applause filled the Warren Enters Theatre last Friday as improvisational comedy show Friday
Night Live said its goodbyes to the audience and closed the curtains on the last show of the
semester.
The cast went all out for its finale, in a 70s themed set including a live band that opened and
participated in some of the skits.
FNL kicked off the show and drew laughter from the audience with a choreographed conflict
where the cast fought over who the actual host of the show would be for the night.
They also brought back some classic favorite skits for the show such as "Scene in the Dark,"
where the audience chooses a scenario to be acted out in pure darkness, and The Good, Bad,
and Ugly Advice, where three cast members give good, bad and ugly advice to three audience
members.
"We've got a group of really solid, good people," said FNL coordinator Lee Becker. "It's been a
great year."
FNL also included new skits such as Pillars, a game where two cast members act out a scene and
if they're stuck on a word, the "pillar" or another cast member will give them a random word.
They introduced next semester's cast as well.
Special guests and current Buffalo State students Nora Hurley, returning from her internship with
Comedy Central, and London Lee both came back for a special cameo in the show's skits.
The show was bittersweet for much of the cast, as six of the 11 cast members - Cindy Delaney,
Chris Stowell, Chris Sams, Travis Carlson, Paul Gabriellini, and Becker - will be graduating this
semester.
FNL cast member Travis Carlson said that his experience helped him grow as an actor.
"I'm not really an actor, but I'm a film and writing major. I think it helped a lot with the speed
you can come up with a scene or tell a story," Carlson said.
Chris Stowell said that improv is a crucial talent.
"I do it because I think improv is a crucial technique and talent to have," he said. "Being able to
think quickly, to move on your feet literally and metaphorically, it really helps you with daily
routine, and it helps you a lot with being to think of thing on the spot," Stowell said.
Becker said before the finale that it would be his best moment.
"I would say the 100th show, but I feel that tonight will top that just for the sentimental value,"
he said. "Just to really get one last go and I think that everyone is just going to let loose. So, I
have high hopes for tonight."
Becker said that cast members Ricky Needham, Trevor Hall, and Jeremy Melendez will be
taking over next semester.
"They're going to be the driving force, but next year is interesting because we basically swapped
out the graduating seniors, so as far as our plan we're not completely sure," he said. "But I think
that they will be really working hard to find a new group dynamic. It'll be really exciting to see
what they come up with."
Looking back on his time with FNL, Becker said there were moments he could have changed.
"I think on a personal level, I kind of took things for granted," he said. "Which I've tried really
hard not to do, you really take for granted that you're always going to have a show Friday and
that there are always people there to watch. So on a personal level, I tried to appreciate it more."
Becker also added that he wanted to thank the students for coming out to the shows.
"[We wanted to just give] a big thank you to everyone that comes," he said. "We can be as funny
as we want, but without people there to laugh, it's not really worth a whole lot."
