New course gives valuable experience

Several Buffalo State College students and adjunct lecturer Nancy Weekly have pulled
together to showcase "Steel - The Art of Experience and Impressions," which coordinates with
the "Community of Steel" exhibit on view at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
Weekly said she tried something new this year with the creation of the new course MST 622, or
Researching and Presenting Museum Collections. In this class, students need to work together on
planning and installing an exhibit.
"I wanted to create a project for graduate students using the collection of the Burchfield Penney
Art Center, and thought an exhibition that paralleled what was being planned for the Community
Gallery would strengthen both our projects," Weekly said.
Weekly said the project was to have each of her students individually go to the Steel Plant
Museum of Western New York and write a report detailing their findings. With the help of Alana
Ryder, curator at the Burchfield Penney, and Spencer Morgan. curator of the Steel Plant Museum
and Buffalo State alumnus in museum studies, the students got a better understanding of the
exhibit they would help create.
Kathleen Slade, one of the graduate students involved in the project, saw this as a way of coming
home.
"The steel exhibit was an exciting undertaking for me," she said. "I live in Blasdell and pass the
skeletal remains of the Bethlehem Steel Plant on a daily basis, and many of my neighbors have
worked in the steel plants, so this project really hit home with me."
Slade said it was a lot of work.
"We chose artworks from the Burchfield Penney's collection and came up with a strategic
plan for our exhibit in the shared space we would be using," Slade said. "Each student in class
also chose a piece that they felt connected to and did a connection report on the artwork and its
frame."
After works were chosen, two interpretive labels were written for the artwork, one for children
and one for adults.
Next, the works were installed. Slade said each student helped with measuring, putting the
appropriate hardware in the wall, and using proper museum procedure in handling the works.
Slade said this project, for her, has been a great experience.
"Being given the chance to do a museum exhibit from the proposal stage all the way through to
installation has been a great experience," she said. "It has prepared me for what it will be like
when I finally get my dream job as a museum curator."
Weekly agreed.
"It has been a great project and very exciting to work with the Steel Plant Museum of WNY
along with doing an exhibit with Burchfield Penney," she said.
The exhibit is on view at Burchfield Penney, in the Collective Studies Gallery and the
Community Gallery, from April 13 to July 1.
The days and times available for viewing are: Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5p.m.,
Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
