CSO Goes to Church in New Discussion

The Caribbean Students Organization is welcoming the college community to
become a part of its "One family under the Sun," as the group prepares to inform
students about other cultures and religions at its second discussion of the year.

"Time Fi Gwan to Church," or "Time to Go to Church" in [language], is hosted by CSO
and Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity, Inc., and will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in
Assembly Hall 1. Students of all faiths and cultures are welcome to attend.

This event, Part Two, is a continuation of the successful program that was started
last semester by CSO's sergeant-at-arms and event coordinator, Harlan Dominique,
and a brother of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc., Brandon Dunkley.

Vice treasurer Channel Davis said that the program will highlight the differences in
the churches of the Caribbean and America.

The discussion will focus "...on everyone's different views about religion, the church
as a meeting place and the people that attend church," she said.

The program will also touch on discrepancies in African American and Caribbean
churches.

"We'll talk about the stereotypes that are out there about church in the
Caribbean,"Dominique said. "We'll discuss the dos (and) don'ts in the church. We'll
provide information about religious customs in different places and even discuss
what people should wear to church.

"Traditionally, people dress up in business attire for church; women wear long, un-
revealing dresses, and men wear suits. In the Bible, it says "Come as you are," so
we'll ask people how they feel about that and how they dress to impress."

In addition, attendees will be asked a variety of questions, allowing the group to
discuss certain issues that they feel are prevalent in their community today, and
how those issues relate to religion and the church.

"(Attendees) will be able to share their opinions and learn more about popular
topics that are pressuring our age groups... our nation, and Christianity," said Briand
Taylor, CSO's public relations officer.

Treasurer Ashley Louimarre said that the unbiased discussion will be targeted
toward youth, who don't tend to still practice religion today.

"We're not trying to tell people to go to church," she said. "We're covering both good
and bad topics in the Christian church... (Attendees) don't all believe in God, but they
believe in something.

"The point of this event is for students to leave with self-worth. Religion ties into
your everyday life, and the hope of this event is to discuss religion and help people
to believe in themselves."

Students will either learn about a religion that they aren't a part of or see how the
religion that they do practice is practiced by another culture.

"This is just one of the events that the Caribbean Students Organization puts on to
inform students," said Shawambie Webbe, CSO's newsletter chair. "We're going to
talk about why people go to church and touch on different religions."

Dominique said that Part Two will be a more in-depth look at Part One, similar to a
debate.

"It may be controversial," said Dominique. "We're going to talk about gender in
the church, and male and female outlooks on the Christian community. We'll also
discuss gay marriage and gay rights."

They hope to build on the momentum of the first part of the series.

"Part One was very successful, especially with discussion and participation," Taylor
said. "There is a part two to the program because there was not enough time to
discuss the topics everyone wanted to discuss, so we set aside a separate date to talk
more and share ideas."

Group members emphasized that this event isn't just for Caribbeans or Christians.

"All races, colors and cultures are welcome," said Romario Gibson, CSO's cultural
heritage chair. "The Caribbean culture itself is a mix of all cultures, and the
Caribbean Students Organization welcomes all students and teaches them about
other cultures. We say that we're divided by the sea, but united by culture."
